New Exhaust!!! :)

I got my "new" exhaust on today, thanks to NOMAD (who originally had a custom axle-back pipe welded onto a new 3A Racing, Air Dynamic (dual canister; straight tip) muffler. The sound is VERY deep, and moderately loud!

I need to get used to it; and my wife is going to f*cking kill me!

The tips stick out more than the stock one. However, when standing at the back of the car, if you look straight down at the bumper, you can't see the tips (they don't protrude beyond the bumper).

morforose3.0: I'm definitely getting attention! Maybe more than I want. For some reason, the police keep staring at my car!

Thanks, man!

I think I'm gonna break down and redo the whole exhaust (headers, racing cat, custom mid-pipe). This will take a few months! Out of $$$$$$!

You expecting any performance gains with the axle back on?

Keep us posted on the next trip to the track. Have you noticed any improvement?

I can tell you that from the experience I had in the short time I had the exhaust on my car you do get a better gas mileage increase and a slightly faster engine spool up time. I have the 2.2 but I'm sure that the 3.0 will have similar results. The best thing is just getting rid of the stock restrictor muffler.

Dust and I found out also that no muffler at all on a 3.0 is just about as loud as with the muffler on (sounds a little more "farty" though). Guess that shows that the straight-through designs really do reduce the backpressure pretty well.

Dust, if you get ready to do the mid section give some thought to the dual set-up that we were chatting about.....

Peace.

neidejb: Like NOMAD said, I notice a slightly quicker engine spool up time. I'll probably hit the track in 2 weeks.

NOMAD: I'll let you know when I start the complete exhaust system upgrade (and if I'll do the dual-exhaust idea).

I started back at my full time job today. This was the first time I've taken the CL into Downtown DC (the lawyer district) since I've done major mods.

It was a trip seeing all of the Bimmers, Jags, Benz, etc. driving around, then comes my dropped, gold-blazing, deafening-sound system, "rolling-on-18s", with my "healthy" exhaust; blowing through the streets like I was at Captial Raceway!

I set off at least a dozen car alarms, just pulling into the underground garage!

I LOVE MY CL!!!!!!

I do the same thing! My exhaust isn't THAT loud either....I guess it's just so deep that it sets off the shock sensors. It's especially easy to do in a parking garage, but I even do it just passing by parked cars.....it's pretty cool.

YUP!

Had to park down on P-4; down 4 levels of expensive cars. The garage attendants just laughed! I warned them before hand that my exhaust was loud! I counted about 14 car alarms going off!

I think it's more about the resonance level (pitch) of the exhaust more than it's decible level.

I think the garage attendants will get sick of me in about a week!

Yea...I can do that. Exhaust is loudest at 2-3K...so its perfect.

Now if I REALLY wanna set alarms off, I turn on my 1000 watt sub.

Yeah! The car alarms are the best. I do miss setting off one guys car every day as I leave my place. Garages are fun too. The frequency is what does it to their vibration sensors. At a certain rpm it will set them off,
very nice and "deep-throaty" (he he, no pun intended).

If you don't want to set them off though you just drive slowly...
Why would you want to do that though?

It would be funny if some guy has a beeper attachment to his alarm and he keeps gettting beeped while he's at work!

I spent most of today over in VA at my nephew's birthday get-together.

Throughout the course of the day I passed 2 Montgomery County (MD) cops, 2 VA State Police (one was standing outside of his car at the Herndon Exit of the Dulles Toll Road--I drove to within 2 feet of him), 3 Herdon cops, plus on my way home, the Montgomery County sub-station (near my house) with several cops waiting to pull out onto the road and several other's standing beside their cars, talking.

None of them even cared to pull me over for loud exhaust!

Maybe I'm safe!?!?!?!?!?

I'm getting quite used to the sound, and I get a hell of a lot of people staring at me!

This is very cool!

BTW: I find that going from 60 mph to 90 mph seems much quicker than it used to be.

Sorry man...Not finished yet. Finals has put a damper on our schedule. Can't do anything till this weekend. Then still have to edit it. As far as sound goes, its very deep...not ricey at all. Starts off pretty quiet, almost can't hear it until the engine gets warm. Then it rumbles at 2-3K. Quiets down at higher rpms, especially when vtec kicks in. Video will be done hopefully in a week. Here's a pic of the exhaust:

Dust, did you jus put on a new muffler or is a cat-back or axle back system? Do you know if they make it for the 2.2? that would be a great exhaust system, oh and could you tell me how much you paid for it?

NOMAD bought the muffler off of eBay (for his 2.2), then had a muffler shop bend a pipe, weld on the hangers and stock flange. Ended up with a nice axle-back system which installed quickly (once the bolts on my stock exhaust were broken free with an impact wrench). Only needed a gasket placed between my stock mid-pipe and the new muffler/pipe.

Yeah, In this particular case though I new exactly what i wanted. I searched around for it and found a twin canister with straight tips. (Don't seem to see those very often, usually it's DTM style) and IMO dual straights is the best look for the CL.
Not your typical 5" single-tip look. (that's what I have now... the wife needed something quiet )
Look around and see what you can find that suits your taste, then get it custom done at the shop if you want. That's the best way to get "exactly" the look you are going for.
Originality counts.
