new cl...can't drive...
I just picked up a 1997 cl 2.2. It is in beaiutiful prestine condition with only 38k miles on it. Not a scratch or ding on the car in or out. I've loved these cars since they first came out and i finally had enough to buy one and i saw this gem so i acted a.s.a.p. Only problem is that it is a manual transmission. I have no idea how to drive. My friend took me out tonight to try buy it ended up being a comedy show for him. I couldn't get the car into gear without it bucking and stalling. Does anyone have any suggestions because i was really discouraged tonight and I absolutley love the car and am looking forward to driving it as soon as i can. thanks.

welcome to the boards. Just keep practicing man, it took me a few hours when i was learning to get first to kick in. After that, its cake. When i was like 14, i had no clue how to drive stick, I started practicing with my friend at around 4pm, by 8pm i was driving around town. You ll get the hang of it.

How is this a problem? Trust me, once you learn how to drive your stick, you'll be so thankful you didn't get an auto 2.2, it would be so sluggish and less fun. No offense to the 2.2 autos
Yea, getting out of 1st is a bitch, but after u get that part down, everything else is easy. But it is pretty damn funny when u see some other person learning stallin and jerkin the car all over the place heh.

When you start to let the clutch up you need to start giving it gas. Practice by keeping your left foot on the clutch, right on the brake, and just SLOWLY letting the clutch up until you see the RPMs start to dip a little bit, or until you feel/hear the engine start straining. When you're driving this would be the point that you'd start giving it gas (steadily). It's a smooth, steady give and take between the clutch and the gas.
When I first started learning my pops took me straight to the steepest hill around. I had it down OK in about an hour.
Don't stress or sweat it - you'll swear by manuals before you know it.

And when your buddy takes you to learn watch what he does and how the car reacts if he is good at driving a stick. See where he lets of the clutch and how the car sounds when he does so. The only way to learn is practice and more practice. Once you get the hang of it you'll learn some little tricks and how to make the car launch faster than any automatic. It's really a fun car to drive in a 5 speed hope you enjoy it as much as i do.
welcome to the board.... all I can say is... I envy you.. I wish I have a 5speed..
Hope you can enjoy it soon.. I bet it is fun when you get a hold of how to drive it.
Damn, why didn't I get a 5sp ....

welcome to the board and HI from seattle ICE MAN!! u got one heck of a deal on your cl man, with a little under 40,000 miles... shoot.. i got mine at 70,000.... hey.. good luck on learning stick.. from reading everyones posts.. i guess its not that hard once u get the hang of it.. I drive a auto.. haha.. so i wouldnt know.. represent AUTO PRIDE!
Think of it like the gas and clutch pedals are connected like a balance (you know, the kind you wiegh stuff on in chemistry). As you let the clutch out give it more gas to compensate, and as you push the clutch in let off the gaspreparing to shift. Do all of this smoothly and you should get the hang of it in no time.
You just gotta know where the friction point is, once you know that, you'll get it. The friction point is when the cluth and flywheel meet. Once you feel them touch and grab, you can just let cluth go a lil faster, otherwise you can burn you cluth out by hold the clutch out too much.

I just started working at a car dealership when i was 17, and had No idea how to drive a stick. The guys I worked with showed me one time, and i jumped in and stalled it ut like 4 times. Then they told me to go get in a brand new Plymouth Breeze, Manual from the front lot, and bring it around back. Let me just tell you, the car was facing up hill on the lot, with another car behind it. I learned real fast how to work that clutch, knowing i'd have to pay a 500 dollar deductible to fix the car behind it, if i didnt get it right the first time...lol. Anyways It can be VERY frustrating at first, but practicing it is the key...hang in there...you'll get it...and just think: when you do, everyone will be soooo jeoulous of your new ride as your cruisin along!
As strange as it sounds, I mastered reverse before 1st. Probably because I knew you need a 'soft touch' when going in reverse in any car, as opposed to just stormin outta the gates in 1st. Just go easy on it and like someone else said pretend the clutch and gas are connected like a balance.
Here you go....first-time clutching:
Like mentioned before, you need to learn the "friction point", or the position your clutch pedal's in when the clutch starts to grab.
Go to the middle of an empty parking lot.
(Or have someone drive you there
1. Push your clutch in all the way.
2. Put gear shift in first.
3. DO NOT GIVE IT GAS.
4. Slowly let out the clutch pedal and practice moving the car WITHOUT giving it gas. The goal is to get it to move with the clutch fully engaged without stalling the car, while NOT giving it gas. (It's possible)
This takes out half of the problem of coodination for the beginner (gas pedal), and brings down the learning gradient a notch.
Hope this helps!

hawaii's traffic BAWHAHAHAHAHAHA.
ur kidding right?
try 10 East... out of LA...
yep I second the stick is easy and that you gotta find the friction point... someone told me to think of it like a balance... don't it fucks stuff up. find the friction point and from there on all you need to know how to do is give your car some gas and ur set.
It'll take a few hours but ur car is a rare find these days how much were they asking?
