Need advice on aftermarket stereos?
Hey all,
Ever since I bought my 97 CL 3.0 Premium edition, the cd player has never worked at all, after some tests i did i found out the cd player was shot, i'm still able to use the radio.
Here's my issue, as you all should know the Premium edition comes with a Bose sound system, but only offers bass and treble and basic volume control for front/rear speakers.! Anyways, instead of buying a new head unit, i'm going with an aftermarket Deck. it'll give me more 'sound' options to work with allow me to get a way a better sound...my questions are:
1) Should I connect the deck so that it uses it's own built in amp, or so that it uses the factory Bose amp?
2) Any partucular brand that sounds good in these kind of cars, most have said go with Alpine, a friend said to get a Clarion DXZ-525 CD Player, but i'm not sure what to get?

FYI - "Deck" and "Head Unit" are the same thing.
If you change the deck, youll need to bypass the amp, and you should change the speakers as well. The Bose speakers are 2 ohm, and will draw too much power from the new deck. Aftermarket decks and speakers run on 4 ohms.
Also, the amp is located in the trunk behind the passenger side tail light.

buy an alpine deck, they have the best signal processing units and they look pretty damn good, get a small 4 channel amp like jl audio, or old school us amps or something else, nothing powerfull. and through in some infinity speakers they are pretty good. dynamite the doors this improves the capability of the speakers i would say dramatially

I would stick with the amp in the deck for pushing your stock speakers. Anything more than that will more than likely blow them, assuming you dont turn it up to loud.
When you upgrade your speakers, then throw an amp to them. otherwise, the aftermarket deck wil give you plenty of power to push the stock speakers.
As far as decks go, i would with a name brand: alpine, sony, clarion (i dont really like clarions, but they are not bad), eclipse (my preference), kenwood or pioneer. Stay away from jenson, dual and crap like that. I personally have a Kenwood Excelon.
Decks are pretty much user preference, so anyone on here will tell you a different brand. And to be honest, you cant go wrong with any of the name brands.
With that being said. Find out which deck you want, then look it up on ebay. You should be able to find it significantly cheaper than you would find it in a store.

DO NOT buy a sony. I install car stereos every day. Stick with Alpine or Pioneer... you can have a decent one for under 200 bucks. and AGAIN.... the stock bose speakers are 2 OHM you DO NOT want to use them with an aftermarket deck.

Thats my radio! I couldn't stand the big whole in the dash area. Mine got stolen about 6 months ago. Now, the fake left radio knob has a 2ct fake diamond earing through it for some added bling. I just plug my 60gb iPOD directly into my 2 amps!

Id go with Late Model Kenwoods, or for the extra money go with the TOP of the line Pioneer. But I went with Alpine and I dont regret it one bit, I got the Alpine CDA-9857 ($350 with warantee) and the whole IPOD setup, Id recommend it. But the other 2 are more advanced if you ask me.
