Leather wearing away on steering wheel

And unfortunately I made it worse since i thought it was grease so i tried to scrub it off. So i just treated it with some leather cleaner/lubricant and it's smooth enough i guess, but of course it will never be as good as new. It's on the top of the wheel, like between the 10 and 2 positions. Anyone else share this experience with me?

as mentioned earlier Chinismo, it only works on the 98-99 First gens, so if you have a 97 you're SOL.
