Keyless entry range problem
Keyless entry range problem
Hey guys, be nice to a 2nd Gen'er! I posted this in the 2nd Gen CL forum, but got no response. Probably most of the 2nd gen CLs aren't old enough to have this problem yet. Did I say old? I meant: sage. Seasoned. Well aged, like a fine wine!
Here is the problem:
My keyless entry quit working after I shipped my car back from overseas. I had the unit that operates the keyless entry replaced and keyless entry works again - but the range stinks!
Before I had the unit replaced, my keyless entry was good for at least 100 yards - maybe more. Now it's good for maybe 20 feet. I have also noticed that I have to pause between unlock/lock commands. Before I could hit: unlock-unlock and all the doors would unlock. Now it's: unlock-one potato-two potato-unlock to get the same result. Same with the lock/beep double push. I have also noticed that the key fob can be "masked" or blocked by the car. For instance - standing by the trunk with the key fob at waist level - the trunk won't pop. I have to lift it up and point it through the rear window. This did not happen before I replaced that control unit.
I have tinted my windows with metallic tint since the replacement, but this was a problem even before the tint went on. I looked at the old part, and there doesn't appear to be any switch or gain control (no switches of any kind) on the unit itself.
Has anyone else had a similar problem after replacing the keyless entry control unit? Is there any way to boost the signal of the keyfob or, alternatively, to adjust the sensativity of the receiver in the car?
Yes, I know you can touch the keyfob to your chin to extend the range. I don't know why it works, but it does. It just makes me look like a retard. (more than usual!)

Either your antenna isn't hooked up or maybe the remote is bad. Try pointing your head at the car, with your mouth open, and put the remote under your jaw and aim up. Use your head as a conductor, if that works, then you know the remote is going bad. I'm not kidding you it does work
Also have you tried replacing the battery in the remote, and or checking the connections from the alarm to the battery? Just a thought

Do what BlackAck suggested and maybe look into getting a new one. Coulda just got a shoddy one.

Since those antennas did not need aux power, you probably could simply use some antenna wire. Set it within your roof liner and mod it to the unit. Though I would try the earlier suggestion of changing the battery first.

Clarification, sorry
I had the receiver unit - in the dash of the car - replaced, not the key fob. I have the same symptoms with both of my keyfobs (both have new batteries), so I don't think it's a keyfob problem.
100 yards on the range might be a slight exaggeration, but I have several times walked almost to the door of the supermarket - realized that I didn't lock the car - and hit the keyfob to a reassuring "beep, beep!" from across the parking lot. Not so much anymore.
I don't need it to work in another zip code, but it would be nice if it worked a little better! Thanks for all the replies.
