Jumping right in!

Hey All!

Here I am, I'm from Swannanoa, NC (Asheville). I just graduated high school and I work at Advance Auto Parts while preparing to go to school full time. Any questions just ask!

I'm going to school for mechanical engineering and I hope to end up with a doctorate.

Here's my baby, a '99 3.0 CL with just under 200K. Today I painted my wheels and grill as a little touch up and it's got me thinking..

I hope to end up with this car sitting a little lower, as well as making a few performance mods. Maybe some dark tint and some other nice things.

Here's where we're at now, I'm not a great photographer so I'm posting the good, the bad and the ugly. I love to take pictures but I'd like to get a nicer camera.

Brand new 225/50-16's.

I'm not going to caption any of them, for obvious reasons.
Coming soon is probably some lowering springs and possibly tint. Also considering new paint, as it definitely needs it.
-Mike

Thanks! That's exactly the direction I was thinking! I might build a CAI with some piece together parts from work, if I can get what I need.

Has anybody here tried the ebay springs? I know they're cheap, but if they work?

Put my employee discount to work and came away with my own piece together CAI for only $47.52! I am extremely happy with the result.

Old 0-60 (actually starts around 5-10 because the light turned green o.O)

Ok, gotchya. Nope, no hum. There's a slight whistle from 600-1300 but you can only hear it with the. Windows open and music down. Sounds great otherwise.

Yes! It definitely needs tint. I think a dark tint will pull the rest of the black trim together. I replaced the blue tape and plastic ring between the elbow and 3" pipe with another blue coupler, except this one is 3" all the way across instead of the 2.5" to 3" that the other one is, more pics tomorrow. I think I will build a stand for it tomorrow, it does need a support.

Most short ram intakes have a resonance and hum like a spaceship, I'm glad that yours doesn't

Brings back memories. I had one of these new and it was a dark green, can't remember the official paint colour name. Have fun.

I would be interested if anyone had any ideas to kill the whistle? Maybe a screen or something at the end of the throttle body?

How did you connect the existing intake to the new intake you built?

The boot that connects the intake to the airbox is 2.5 inches on the inside. I put a clamp around it and it connects to the 2.5 inch pipe which connects to the 3 inch pipe via the reducer connector, from the 3 inch pipe into the elbow.

Anyone in the Asheville area want to go for a drive one of these weekends? I have this and next Saturday off.

Let me know how the support bracket looks when you get it done, great work. The only part I worry about is the plastic 90 degree elbow holding up over time.

welcome to the community, nice car. you can do a quite a bit to your car depending on what you want from it.
the s.r.i. you made is fine, the problem is the huge restrictive air box, you bipassed it so your good. you should (if havent already) remove the part of the box in your fender, its like 10lbs, and you will get a lot more outside air to that s.r.i.
definitely get tint. ive havent done my suspension yet, mine is new but stock, im trying to go faster 1st but a 1.5 - 2 inch lowered cl is so nice.

as for the humm,.. i had it, kept doing stuff to my car and still the humm, then, i believe when i did the pulleys it stopped,.. not sure that was it but it dont humm and it did before the pulleys...???...i dont think that was it but i cant pin point it cause i got used to it and its gone now. still has a whistle when the throttle plate is bout 20 - 30% open, fucks with people so i like it, kinda the cars signature, like the star fighters whistle.

p.s. good luck on the engineering ticket, im going for environmental engineering.

I have pictures of the stand I built, I was thinking to build another for the back of the filter but when I box off and seal the area the plate I use will hold up the rear sufficiently. For a while I thought to put the filter into the area that the lower airbox came out of but I don't want to deal with any water problems.

Thanks! The complete stock system has been removed aside from what I reused (intake bootu to throttle body) and is sitting in the garage. Tint is coming soon, I may do it myself. ,Suspension might be a little ways out. Dad said he found some skunk2 springs for $172 but ground control makes the specifically for the 99 CL and I can get them for $339. And they are adjustable. I agree, a moderately lowered CL is the tits. As far as the intake goes I am not getting the hum of a space ship but only the throttle body/plate whistle at low throttle. Best of luck to you in the engineering thing, I love mechanics and I have a little hands on experience so that's why I chose this route.

GOODIES!! (Below)

Painted!!

Built the stand and painting!

Gonna photoshop a drop onto this pic in a few!

Keeping track of the paint cans. I'm sure I've spent over a thousand dollars on spray cans this year.

A couple cans left on the shelf. Running low.

First bit of plastic out.

The whole assembly, 10 pounds maybe?

I think it looks good.

$39.04 worth! I love discounts!!
Flowmaster Super 40 Series 2.25 IN (offset) 2.25 OUT (center)
16 inches of cheapo exhaust tubing

Welded up and dropped (Lifted 0.o) in!

Nope, doesn't scratch on anything unless you bottom out the suspension hitting a bump or dip or one of the nasty steep entrances around here, just have to be aware or it all and you're good.

nice work on the muffler and bracket, your car looks great, im sure you are going to make that thing a head turner. i used to be a chevy guy (still like em a lot) imports never did anything for me but them me gots my cl, oh man i LOVE these cl's, they look so nice and not like anything elce on the road with a 200h.p. v6, im doing mine and getting a second gen. type-s once me done my engineering course (graduation gift).

as for your cl,.. oh man the possibilities with some1 like you at the helms in intriguing, cant wait to see what you do next, i love when people custom their rides (not the o'l canadian tire catalog chrome dress up and sticker pack custom)
kinda expensive at $400 but you should get some under drive aluminum pulleys, easy to do (for a weekend hobbyist) and the j30a's love them. way better rev's and acceleration and a realistic 10 - 15 h.p. (motor not pavement). with your muffler and s.i.r. you will notice them and they look so nice.
