J30A1 4 Speed Auto Trans Rebuild and J32A2 swap and more
Hey guys
2 years ago there was a thread started inside the J30 4 speed tranny it was nice to see but it lacked tons of pics.
The vehicle 1998 Acura 3.0CL
Problem tranny slips above 4500rpm and goes into limp gear.
What im going to be doing is overhauling the transmission with a master tranny rebuild kit i bought, putting on a rabestos tranny filter,B&M tranny cooler after break in i will use royal purple atf if it has the ATF z1 additive i think i need.
Well here is the kit.
this kit is alot bigger then i thought for parts wise. All 4 clutch packs and steel plates. Every Oring and seal in the tranny along with case gaskets and all orings for the valve body.
I will be starting this rebuild next weekend. So hope keeping my fingers crossed there is no bad bearings in the tranny.
Wel tranny its out.
Started stripping it today but ran into a snag. The socket i needed was a 34mm. Also noticed that all the filter strainers have clutch partical in them all.
Got the 34mm socket and the cases split.
The tranny strainer LOL
2nd gear clutchs were worn down. Some of the disc look new and some were wore down to the plates.Clutch busket covered in clutch material.
Progress so far.
Trans cases clean
Had to make a clutch piston compresor tool.
Got around to porting out the cases and porting out the valvebody. I ported/ chafferened the shift silnoid orfices.I also ported and gasket matched the fluid inlet from the filter to the pump.
If you guys notice in the one pic that the filter was so glogged that it hydrolocked and forced the filter threw the shim plate.
Valve body cleaning.
Clutch pack assembly and checking measurements.
Tranny all assembled
Well the canada post strike is over and i got the new torque convertor from a member on here.

This was started last year. The car runs , i drove it around shifted good but with being in the army im busy.
So in marc the trans is coming out for some SONNAX valve body parts and a Torque convertor valve designed by sonnax to correct the burning up of the auto trans.
Im also doing a RECON torque convertor and will be putting in the J32A2.
Sonnax parts ive ordered.

my hats off to you, I have done engine rebuilds on many cars but I have never attempted to do a transmission rebuild myself because it has always intimidated me because of all those clutches and small parts that has to have the perfect clearance. I love seeing all the pics and time you took doing this project and am sure it will help others that decide to do the same thing. I didn't know they made a kit to stop the transmission problem though, has anyone ever used it and if so does it actually work? Not like the EGR fix that actually doesn't do much good at all

Sonnax and transgo only realeased these kits in early oct so i doubt anyone has tested it yet.
Im home in march and will be pulling the trans out and putting the parts in and the J32A2 in and will be beating this thing and see if it holds up.
