intake
intake
Hi, new to the forum, more or less. Anyway, just got this pioneer head unit for $200 and it's just so dam nice that it got me into a rush to buy more stuff lol. Next is tint and intake. I really don't know what tint I want, but I guess it's pointless to ask for advice since it's all personal preference. Intake, on the other hand, I need advice with. I'm no mechanic, I know the basics, but I don't know how each type of intake varies from each other. I was thinking of saving some money and getting a short ram instead of a cold air, but I read that short ram is louder inside the car (not good). How come AEM is so much more expensive than the other types? Is it worth it? I'm willing to spend as much as $300 (the AEM cold air intake), but only if it's worth it, since I still have to get radar detector (Valentino 1.8/Escort 8500), tint, infiniti speakers, paint job, maybe even a body kit (I hate the yellow in the front), and my muffler broke 2 days ago. What are all those filters and stuff? Do I need them?
I'll probably have my family mechanic install the stuff. I'm going to buy the stuff on ebay, but if anyone has something for sale on here, then I might as well just get that.
'99 2.3 btw.

AEM is the best buy for the $ that's why it's the most expensive. Most people on here prefer the V2. It's a badass intake. I went for a short ram myself, because I didn't have the $200some to drop on a CAI. It's mostly personal preference as well, but the V2 AEM is the best bang for the buck.

after i get this and the detector, ill wait to do headers and exhaust and all, and do some visual upgrades, is there any step, financially, between basically tint, and then a body kit? besides neon and all that

welcome aboard jigga.
I have a CAI from AEM, and I love the thing. I've also got headers, crank pulley, and exhaust and all definietly add some noticible umph to the acceleration.
next i'm looking at dropping it for some looks/better handling. that will definiely add to the fun factor in driving the car, so I hear.
good luck, and if you have any questions, dont let the veterans scare you off w/the "534RCH BEF00RE J00 5P34K N00B!!111!!!" jibber-jabber.
but ya, search button is also very helpful.

CAI stands for cold air intake. LED's are just small bright light bulbs. LED underbody kits are a better alternative to underbody neons. They are brighter, and draw WAY less power, and can change colors, or patterns depending on which set u buy.
get a generick one from ebay. i paid 18$ for mine almost 2 years ago. ive only cleaned it once, (i know)...
the gains are minimul for the 300$ ones. thier actually minimal for any intake maybee 5 hp. the hp difference between the 18$ one from ebay and 300$ one maybe like 1/2hp no where near worth 300$. some may say they last longer. well if the cheap one lasts atleast 2 years, and u buy a new one thats only 36$. for 4 years. to me its not worth getting the expensive ones. unless u get a great deal of course.
another thought... for the price of an expensive intake u can get the cheap one and headers. then ull be usin the 300$

the only BIG reason the AEM costs more, is because its actually tested on the cars.. unlike generic where its pumped out thousands of times without being tested
save some money, and buy a cheap one.. just spend about 40 bucks to get the K&N filter...
all together cost on ebay... intake=$20+K&N filter=$40 = $60 -$300= $240
u save $240 this way! u could get tint, intake, and LED accessories if u want
My friend went to the Injen Factory 2 weeks ago, he said they are no different the factory hes using to make his intakes in china (for Scion xB, and Subaru WRX). He said the biggest difference is that these big companies shell out the couple thousand dollars to get everything CARB approved. THe moral of my long story is that if u live in an area prone to assclown cops that check for those types of things, it might be worth it to get an overpriced intake. if not Ebay away..
wow, so exactly what do i need to get? like what's the actual name of the generic intakes? and what's the exact name of the filter? Thanks a lot, I'll take the $240 towards my radar detector, if there's really no difference between the lower intakes and the AEM V2.

The AEM uses different diameter intake piping for each application, the ebay ones use a universal 3" size. If it's too big you get poor throttle response. I know cause I had one with 3" pipe and the lag was horrible. Felt like it was gonna stall when starting from a stop.

The generic ones actually have no name. The filter you want to get is AEM or K&N. There IS a difference between the generic one and the V2. The V2 is dyno proven to make power, the generic one might just make noise.

installing a intake is SUPER EASY!!
it may seem difficult at first.. but its not..
all u need are a couple tools
a screw driver and a socket wrench w/extension
should be a 15 min job.. but first time install probably takes about 30 min
Step 1
Remove the factory air filter housing cover by detaching the retaining clips around the housing and loosening the retaining ring clamp that holds it onto the factory air intake duct.
Step 2
Remove the air factory intake duct from the throttle body. You'll need to detach some of the vacuum lines coming off of the intake duct.
Step 3
Remove the air filter element from the factory air filter box and then remove the two bolts that hold the box onto the car frame. These bolts are located toward the rear corners of the air box. Lift the air box out of the car completely and set it aside.
Step 4
Slide the rubber fitting from the aftermarket intake over the throttle body opening. Then slide two sets of ring clamps provided with the kit onto the rubber fitting. Tighten one ring clamp onto the fitting to secure it to the throttle body.
Step 5
Slide the intake pipe (bent end) into the rubber fitting and tighten the other ring clamp to hold it in place.
Step 6
Attach the included cone air filter onto the other end of the intake tube using another ring clamp.
Step 7
Now attach the vacuum tube lines as indicated on the instructions included with the kit.
good luck!
