Install rotor, rape by Pepboy?

I went to Pepboy to replace my rotor. They told my CL
is those "slide hammer" type rotor. It is very hard to install a new
rotor, they need to hammer it or something instead of just put the rotor on, so they have to charge me extra 3.5 hours of labor.

Is this true?

They are correct in that this is not a quickie!

There is a special tool that is made to pull off these front rotors; without it, changing the rotors can be a bitch (I've done it both ways).

My suggestion is to buy or rent the tool and do it yourself. Otherwise take it to a mechanic/dealer who has the tool, and can do it correctly (and faster).

If Pep Boys is going to spend 3.5 hours, then they don't have the proper tool, and I'd take your CL elsewhere!

you guys are fawkin nuts.... and need to stop believing everything you hear... I have x-drilled slotted rotors on my car...

it takes a large phillips head screw driver to remove 2 screws each rotor... if they are frozen on, it can be a bitch but you do not need special tools.... heat them with a torch and then try, If that doesnt work, drill them out, you do not need those bolts to hold the rotor... they are only to make life easier... I don't use them anymore!!!! It took me 40 minutes to do the rears drilling out the screws and 2 hours on the fronts by heating them, but those times also include changing brake lines and painting the calipers... your mechanics are ripping you!

You have a '98. The '97 front rotors are different!

There is NO way on hell you can remove the front rotors on a '97 3.0 with only a phillips screw driver. Been there. Done that!

ah true indeed... they sent me the 97s by mistake the first time i ordered them for my 98.. still shouldnt be difficult at all (not as difficult as these mechanics make it out to seem)

I spent 2 hours last night trying to remove the frontdrivers rotor without the tool. Didn't work. Caliper was off in 10 min, but couldn't get the friggin rotor off. I have the helm manual and I think it says to remove the knuckle and the hub for replacement. After 2 hours of F****ing around, I quit. I'll try the rear's tonight, seems alot easier. Will Acura dealer install aftermarket rotors and pads? or should I go to a shop and expect to pay for 3.5 hours laber each rotor if they don't have the tool?

This blows, i don't want to get raped today

just bought new front rotors, i just put brakes on about 2 months ago, still brand new. should i just keep the front brakes on or replace them. i am going to put the rotors on myself because it looks real easy but wondering if you have to do anything to them first.

Unfortunately, without the tool to pull the hub, splitting the knuckle is the only way !

The '97 design really sucks. The '98/'99 design is so much easier (you don't need to pull the hub)!

I don't know if the dealer will install aftermarket rotors and pads. Call them and find out.

There's a good chance that a shop may have the hub-puller. Ask them for an estimate before-hand.

Good luck!

Raped my Pepboy

I posted my question too late. I had pepboy installed both front rotors for me, and installed their "quiet" brake for a total cost of $470. Mostly is because of that dam 3.5+ hrs labor.

I heard there is a universal guideline about what work should take how long on a car. Is it from AST? Can anyone tell me?
I want to make sure I didn't get f*** by Pepboy. Thanks
