Improving My Start Time??

Hey Everyone, Im new to this whole page and when talking to my friend w/ a 2.2 he told me to view this site and get involved. I've got a 97' 3.0 with one slow ass start time, cold air intake and a whole exhaust system.
Heres what im hoping you all can help me on. When i race, i put it in third (being an automatic and all) and powerbreak it. I can only get my RPMS to 2.5 when i powerbreak it and then when i take off, its slow as hell until my VTEC kicks in. What am i doing wrong? Is there any way i can improve my takeoff time and not get left in the dust anymore?
What the best way to start out in a automatic? Put it in third or go from 1st to 3rd?
Hope You All Can Help!
Thanks! ~CJ~

Welcome to the site!

I launch just as you've mentioned above, but the only thing I do differently, is flick the nitrous switch after stomping on it!

Seriously, I keep it in D3 for the whole run. I power brake as you've mentioned. I dont have any other suggestions for the lauch!

My first car was a $200 82 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra (this was in 96) that was seven diferen shades of gray. Well take my advice and dont ever rev it up in neutral and then drop itno gear.

How about drop it to one. Power brake to 2.5 to3 rpm and go. Works good dont forget to shift up though.

I tired starting in first and shifting. When in first, it seems like my RPMS take longer to rise and is slower. When in 3rd, my RPMS shoot up after a few sec of delay. I donno which is better, starting in 1st and shifting up to 2nd and 3rd or just staying in third. If i shift up, will that hurt my tranny???

Leave it in D3 and run it like hell. Eventually it'll get better and your times will improve.

Who would win? A 97 2.2 CL (manual) with short intake or a 97 3.0 CL (auto) with Coldair and exhaust system. I'm racin him at the track and friends say we will kill me off the line but i should gain and win in the 1/4 mile

The 3.0 should win.

Hey!!!!! You thought I wouldn't see this post?!! LOL. He is talking about me guys. I was the 2.2 that dusted him off the line but he pulled so hard after 2nd gear. He ran a 16.5 at the track as his best run. I ran a 16.452 as my BEST run. Personally I ahve beat a few STOCK 3.0's. I think that it is going to come down to how well I drive on Friday.

i heard the older ones do. My friend has a 91-92 maxima and he beats me after 2nd gear. But he also has no cat, intake, exhaust , and modified chip with no speed gov or fuel cut off.

I dont think it matters if you put it in first or whatever. When you take off your auto tranny is always going to be in first. If you keep it in third it just wont shift into fourth. Pretty easy to comprehend

start in 1st

i think you should start in first. i have a 99 3.0CL and have spent many, many nights losing and figuring out the right way to shift for acceleration. i don't know how good it is for your tranny but i start in 1st hold down the brake(the foot one) and rev to 3000. then i always beat everyone off the line. the tricky part is getting to third. you either work it to pull in 2nd gear from 5500 to 6250 and then go to D3 or just go straight from 1st to D3. either way my fastest 0-60 is 7.1. i am stock except for a drop-in K&N(no big gain there). if you can't beat the 2.3 you should tuck your d*** between your legs and go home...or get NOS like dustbuster did

All of my best ETs at the track have come from starting in D3, powerbraking, then mashing the accellerator. You don't need to worry about shifting into D4 unless you're going well over 100mph.

Every run that I've done when shifting from 1-2-D3, have yielded SLOWER ETs.

Im goin with KC CL 1785 to the track Fri for 4 hrs so i should get a good 15+ runs in...i guess i will try both and see what happens. Hey Dustbuster, how bad it is for your tranny to start in 1st...redline...then 2nd...redline...then D3???? (dont forget i have a 3.0 auto..)

Since I'm only doing it approx once a month at the track, I don't think it's too bad on the tranny. I'm also allowing the tranny to shift on it's own, so that I don't detonate any cylinders with the nitrous. All it take's it to go beyond redline, to the point when the fuel pump shuts down, to detonate a cylinder.

OUCH! :'(
