Ignition Timing

Can someone explain to me exactly what Ignition Timing is? What are the effects of it being advanced or retarded? What mods will enable you to change it on a 3.0? When would you want to change it? Thanks.

Ignition timing is the point at which the spark ignites the air/fuel mixture as it is compressed in the cylinder. An ignition upgrade with a retard control would enable you to adjust the timing. I don't think it offers much gain unless you are altering your fuel as well, such as with a turbo setup.

I've heard/read things like "the car runs alittle rich stock so advancing the timing can give you a couple of HP", so that gives me the impression that the more fuel that is getting into your engine the more advanced the timing can be and hence the more power you can have? Is this correct?

If it is, then can we do a whole bunch of fuel upgrades (i.e. fuel pump, adjustable fuel regulator, and new fuel injectors) which would cause the car to run rich under ordinary timing conditions, but then advance the timing to make horsepower?

Just dont ever advance your timing with NOS, you'll blow your shit up. But if your going all motor, it wouldnt hurt to advance your timing

note to all: you can NOT adjust the timing unless you have a aftermarket ecu, the stock ECU will set back to the original position or the ecu will put it back in the original position

Cilver2.3 tried this on his CL when he had it and he told he it just put it back to the original position

i woulndt advance your timing unless you have a aftermarket ECU and more add ons to make the advancing better for you timing and overall time

It's helpful to retard the timing when running more than a 75-shot of nitrous.
