ignition problems

is it possible to wear out the starter if you try to turn your car on to much when the battery is dead?

I am still having slight problems with the ignition or starting my car... the battery is new and fine... but it is almost as if the charge or the starter is not giving enough spark to start the engine. I'm going to replace plugs and wires which I think is due... but I was wondering if I wore out the starter or maybe it is my alternator...

im doubting alternator because once I start the car everything is fine... so I guess it is isolated to the starter or the wiring. from battery to somewhere or the spark wires or the spark plugs or whatever.

also is it possible to ruin the battery if these other things are not fixed real soon?

I need to press the gas pedal to the floor or the car will not start does that give any more insite to the issue?

I am in the same boat as you. Car was hesitating to start so I purchased a new battery (was due for one anyway), and everything was good for a day. Now the car doesnt even click when I turn the key and im 99% sure its the starter.

"I need to press the gas pedal to the floor or the car will not start does that give any more insite to the issue?"

Are you saying when you turn the key you are flooring the gas and you can get it to start?

if I do not press the gas to the floor while turning the key it just clicks and the lights blink on the gauges like it was starting... but just clicks.

if I push the gas to the floor it has a tough time starting but the last 3 times I had start the car it started using that method and then the rpms fly to 3000 which I do not like since car is cold. but that is the only way it will start at the moment.

Ah I see. Mine doesn't even click. I am thinking that I will make a trip to autozone and purchase a new starter. Where is the starter on our cars, and how would I go about changing it? (3.0 here)

from what you described, i think your starter is going out. since you can run fine after it starts, its not the alternator. changing wires and plugs won't help your starting problem.

it is next to the transmission I believe. it is labled with a honda sticker and denso.

the problem I have is I can't get the starter off... the bolt is to stuck can autozone test the starter while it is on the car?? i am thinking no.

it did the first time... then after that... stopped working so well the clicking returned.

new battery was a optima yellow top. Turned out I had a bad battery... is it possible for a starter to have negative effects on a battery and make this battery go bad too?

it could be ur alternator than....starting up the car take a lot of power then after that it was drain when u left it on and ur alternator isnt charging the battery. try jumping it with another car and if it work then its not ur battery or starter but its ur alternator.

it is definatly the alternator. autozone can test it for free on the car. it doesent take much power to maintin once it is started, but ur car isnt charging the battery enough to keep it charged. if u dont change ur alternator u will be buyning a new battery soon. it starts when the pedal is to the floor because there is no back pressure on the motor, meaning it takes less power to start.

interesting... well to make sure I isolate the problem or problemS I will need to get both alternator and starter tested... I know how to take out both... problem is I can't really take them off... starter is stuck to the block like white on rice and the alternator haven't tried.

Well after a long trip at pepboys it turns out my problem was not the starter/battery/alternator, but the negative battery cable =\

20$ for diagnosis to find the problem, then $50 for labor and the cable. Better than buying a new starter though =\

well went to pepboys yeah 19.99 and found out that my battery was bad again... hmm could have gotten that diagnosed free at autozone...

go to the autozone they are out of the yellow tops... they send me to a diff store that store supposedly have it but it was teh wrong one... so they send me to a diff store. I finally get the battery and put it in starts up fine... we will see if this battery lasts...

I still think it could be the alternator... if my car doesn't start tomorrow or this week I'll go back to pepboys and tell them to fucking check the alternator... sigh what a 4 hour escapade... waiting and driving and waiting in line some more.

hi,

newbee here ... with some questions

i have a 97 3.0 with 89k miles on it. i am having lot of problems with the starter lately. get lucky if it starts in one click. sometimes takes 3-4 atleast. i am not sure if it's starter related or not. i am getting my timing belt/water pump replaced, engine tune up (gettin all the belts changed), engine valve cap is leaking so im gonna have to change that. any ideas what else should i take care of after these many miles? I replaced the radiator couple yrs back. could anyone also tell me what other problems should I expect in the future because the only reason i am spending this much money on it is so i can use it for a longer period of time.

any ideas/insights greatly appreciated...

besides what you are doing no other problems you should have unless you have an automatic transmission.

i was totally suprised that a yellow top was bad battery.... the people said only way was it came that way from the factory.. my car starts fine these days suprisingly so im assuming it really was a battery issue.
