if the + and - of the batery touches what happens...im fucked

I was changing one of my battery terminals today and while I was tightening the + terminal my vise grip accidently touched the - terminal. When I tried to start the car it turned over for a split second the my dash went blank (everything just shut down), does anyone know what causes this?

Check your fuses. You may have blown something.

Prob just a fuse or something. Unless it touched for an extended period of time, it shouldn't harm the battery. If you touched the terminals together, and them removed the bridge - shouldn't have damaged the battery. The car on the other hand - may have blown a fuse or something.

If everything works fine then I wouldn't worry about it. You should be good.

The box under the hood or just the one in the car?

If all the fuses are good, then you might have a problem on your hands.

If you have the stock alarm it wouldn't kill the starter. Check the ecu fuse if thats not it then try another battery.

It can mess up the battery or damage the Alternator. I am not too sure on the alternator. I forget how but sometimes a dead battery or something can mess up an alternator. known couple of people who said their battery went bad and some how the alternator went back. Have no idea y.

Make sure you check the 100amp fuse under the hood. After i got my engine in, my buddy thought he would help me put my battery back in and he hooked the terminals up backwards. All i had to do is replace that main fuse.

If everything in the car is completely dead then this is most likely the problem. Usually a direct short of the two terminals will blow the main fuse. That fucker ain't cheap either to buy.

^^^ I agree. You need to be more careful man. That very well could have hurt ya pretty badly. If you've never seen anything cross terminals on a battery before (a few of us did a little 'test' in shop in high school to see what would happen), then just trust me, you don't want that to be your hand in there. We dropped a craftsman 3/4" wrench across the terminals and it split it in two. Scary stuff.

This I don't believe, unless you left it for like an hour. I was tightening down some battery terminals on a truck and pulled the 3/8" (I think) Craftsman wrench down right on the opposite side. Nice sparks until it stuck- then I just knocked the wrench off. It was a little warm, but hardly about to split in half. This was an F250, so it really had the power of both of it's batteries behind it.
