I was changing one of my battery terminals today and while I was tightening the + terminal my vise grip accidently touched the - terminal. When I tried to start the car it turned over for a split second the my dash went blank (everything just shut down), does anyone know what causes this?

Prob just a fuse or something. Unless it touched for an extended period of time, it shouldn't harm the battery. If you touched the terminals together, and them removed the bridge - shouldn't have damaged the battery. The car on the other hand - may have blown a fuse or something.

Make sure you check the 100amp fuse under the hood. After i got my engine in, my buddy thought he would help me put my battery back in and he hooked the terminals up backwards. All i had to do is replace that main fuse.

^^^ I agree. You need to be more careful man. That very well could have hurt ya pretty badly. If you've never seen anything cross terminals on a battery before (a few of us did a little 'test' in shop in high school to see what would happen), then just trust me, you don't want that to be your hand in there. We dropped a craftsman 3/4" wrench across the terminals and it split it in two. Scary stuff.
