How to calculate offset

This isn't making sense to me with the conversion. Sorry, I'm a nOOb at this. I'm looking at rims that state 17x7, backspace 5.5. According to the chart in the nOOb thread, I'd be looking for 40-45mm offset for 215-45/17 tires, which threw me for a loop. I tried using this site:

http://www.rsracing.com/tech-wheel.html#backspace

But that confused me. Can somebody please chime in with a yay or nay on these rims for my 97 2.2? I think I'm missing something in the calculation. The rims claim to fit an Accord. Thanks!

those numbers sound about right for that size wheel. Dont know what's so confusing.

Honestly, what is confusing to me is, yes it should fit, or no it won't. I've got all the #'s, I just don't know what to do with the stats, what to convert or consider. Sorry again, this isn't really my realm. This is my wife's daily driver, and while I had a sick lowered Prelude back in the day, this really isn't my specialty. I drive a Nissan Pathfinder on 6" lift rolling mud tires, and big tires and lift have been my realm for the last many years.

That being said, what do you guys think?

Oh, and the offset figures I stated where what I read off the chart in the nOOb post. I don't know how to read the stats on these rims as far as to figure out if they fall within those specs for offset, etc. With the numbers I've given, would anybody be able to give some advice on if it should work, or where I'm wrong and what I should be looking for in the future. I'd like to end with roughly the rim size and tire size stated above, and am looking for help on getting there. Thanks again.

For a 7" or 8" wide wheel, +40-45 offset is safe. If you go with the 7, you should run a skinnier tire like a 205/40.

For a flush look like this, I'd say go with a lower offset prolly in the +20 range or lower; or a wider wheel like an 8.5".

If you want to run a flush wheel fitment while being slammed, you'll need to work your fenders and run skinnier tires.

The more wider or the lower the offset you go, you will run into problems. Best bet if you don't want to deal with problems, don't attempt it. If you love the look and don't mind the adventure, then persue it. You just need to be precise when calculating offset and wheel clearance.

Thanks for input. So with the 7 as I stated, would this translate to a wheel pushed farther out? I have stock 16" with 205/55 and there appears to be plenty of room. With relatively similar width and diameter, would these rims go out farther then? Would I be looking at rubbing and stuff?

I'm looking for a wider tire/rim. I've got Michelin Pilot MXV4 on the car (bought it with them) and although they claim to be quiet and good handling, they are absolutely far from it. Loud, hard, and slick even on dry sticky asphalt. I'll probably be going either with Kumho's (cheap) or if I'm feeling rich Goodyear F1's, but I want some sticky (and probably wider) rubber.

Thanks again!

Naw dude, 17x7" wheel is safe to run. Stock I believe is 16x6 or 6.5". A very common fitment would be 17x7 or 18x8 for example. You'll only need to worry about clearance if

1) You're lowered more than 3"
2) Running a wheel wider than 8.5"
3) Running a "low" offset like +30 or lower
etc.

Kumho's are great for the price. Even Federal's. I'd say stick to the common fitment; get a tire with good dry and wet traction and etc; and don't worry about going wider (especially if you're concerned about clearance).

the ray's i was runnin before was a 7.5" +30 205/40/17.

both front and rear had some space to go wider but i was "pushing it" with that fitment at the ride height i was at (aka slammed). the only modifications i did was to the fronts only, which was flattening the fender lip; and removing the fender liner (cuz they served me no purpose).

Cool, that basic part is what I was after. I didn't think a minor change in size would matter, just wanted be sure before I bought them. Yes, things will be stock height on only 7" and higher offset. Alllllright.
