You can get "so-called" HID or Xenon Bulbs for a few bucks...supposedly they are filled with an inert gas like xenon or argon and can make your bulb look whiter. However, they still contain a filament and act like a normal bulb.

HID bulbs that go with an HID kit are usually over $100 for a pair. They do not have a filament. The bulb is filled with an inert gas, but an arc is created within the bulb that emits the light. These bulbs can last over 2000 hours, and are used in an HID kit that will contain a ballast for each bulb, at the very least.

I'll let someone else get into specifics on color temp (K) and other crap having to do with HIDs

HID bulbs = fake aftermarket bulbs that claim to have the output of HID's.. lie. however, there are replacement HID bulbs, which connect with ballasts etc to produce real HID output.

HID kit = ballasts AND the bulbs together in one box lol.

4300k is white yellowish, has best ouput. 8000k is bluish white, less output, anything greater = almost no output but looks nice, but no output so it sucks... IMO, HID's are only worth if it they have good output.

yeah the fake stuff is called "xenon"

anything that says "HID" is real but you cant use it without the ballasts to get the voltage up to some insane level

it's actually if you go over 6000K i think that you begin to lose lumens. A high Kelvin temp, does not always mean that you get a good output of useable light.
