my calipers and rotors are pretty rusted too (car lived in VT for its first 3 years) I've been using a stiff wire brush (hand brush, or an adaptor for a drill) to take it off. If its really rusty you can let it soak in water and vinegar (not sure of the concentration, but i think it is around 1:1). I've just been using that on my calipers i'm calling my rotors a lost cause and just saving up to get new ones.

When I painted my calipers, I bought an "all-in-one" kit off of eBay. It contained brake cleaner, a stiff wire brush, and some rust reformer (also included the paint). This worked great!

You may get the products cheaper elsewhere, but the idea behind the "kit" is excellent: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2421556366
