HELP!! problem with shift lock

I have a 97 2.2 CL. I'm starting to have problems with my shift lock button on my shifter. It is an automatic. There are times when i cant press the button to change from "park" to "reverse, drive, etc." What i end up having to do is sticking my key into that slot just right of the shifter. Other times it works fine. Anyone know why this is happening and what i can do to fix it??? Thanks a lot!!

this may just be related.....
something similar happened to me on another vehicle.
*cough*nissan*cough*
the Brake Interlock was damaged... thus preventing me
from shifting out of park.
also, are you parked on an incline? that adds more weight
on the brake interlock as well.
good luck... and don't force anything!
i learned the hard way.

did you change the shifter? because when i changed mine, you have to make sure you dont push it down to far, or have it too far up, otherwise you are going to have problems putting into gear.

I have a similar problem. The issue is the lock solenoid. If it is dirty, you may need to remove the center console and clean the lock solenoid. When mine gets stuck, I re-engage the park brake and step on the gas a little. Then, I step on the brake again and it unlocks. You can also feather the brake peddle a little and you will hear the lock disengaging. Good luck.
