Help me out guys I dont know what to do lol
So Ive found a 01 Cl type-s with nav. Ive always wanted one, I went and test drove it yesterday and there are a few things that caught my eye, well and my ears. The srs light stayed on the whole time I was driving it, when I floored it, there was a funky rattling type noise, it didnt sound horrible, but not great either. As for the transmission, "im sure someone will ask" it shifted great, in sport mode and in d5. The story on the car, as I have the carfax is that its from New York, it was drivin there for a year by its orignal owner before being sold and taken to New Jersey, where it stayed there for 8 years and was just brought here to NC this year. The car only has 93,000 miles on it and has had 2 owners. When I opened the hood, the mount to my left, "passenger side" looked to be broken, but I couldnt really tell, there was just rubber hanging from it, other then that, there was ample rust in spots of the engine bay, and on the front engine plate. It has been in one minor accident, no total loss. The inside is pristine condition, the outside has a few scuffs none that bother me to much. I dont know if the transmission has ever been replaced, nor do I know if the timing belts has been replaced. The asking price for the car, is 6672.00 after paperwork. Im already in motion but am having cold feet, what would you guys do?

1. This forum is dead in the mornings.
2. I wouldn't but it. Just me, but I don't plan on buying another car with an auto. Only vehicle I'd buy in an auto would be a truck.

So the trans is a definite concern, they go out more frequently than our 1st gens, so I'd be cautious about that. Second thing, is it's from the north meaning it will have salt damage and rust on the undercarriage. The rattling you're hearing is probably the heat shield on the cat, which is an easy fix. Or it could be from the busted motor mount that you mentioned. Personally, if this is from a dealer, I would ask them to replace the motor mount and fix the rattling before I took ownership. If it's a private sale, see if the seller would help fix those things before the sale. Otherwise, it sounds like a nice car.

You need to allow time for responses, 20 mins isn't enough time for people to check in.

if he is a mechanic, you should not be guessing what parts are broken and need replacing. He should be disclosing everything that he knows about the car. you said, it looked to be broken? you didnt ask him?
i also agree with blackack...he should be disclosing what is wrong with the car and reducing the price or helping you fix these problems.
and why are you rushing? when your rush in a car deal, you always get screwed. take your time, sir. you are the buyer. you are in control

lol, lets keep in mind that this is a first time thing for me lol, thats why Im asking everyone for advice first lol. I just emailed the guy, he said he is having the srs light problem fixed now, and I asked him about the mount and the noises, now Im waiting on a reply. But when i drove it yesterday I was to nervous to ask questions and for some reason he wouldnt shut up long enough for me to get a word in edgewise. He was begging me to trade mine in, and Im totally against that. He was only giving me 1,700.00 for a trade in. I guess I was nervous about asking because accoding to my bank Im getting $3,000.00 off of what he should ask for it. I dont know though, but keep the comments coming lol. This is a big decision for me, my parents "whom I dont live with btw" are totally against it, but its for different reasons, thats why im asking everyone else.

baby steps.
can you afford $6672?
can you afford the maintenance? tires, oil, gas, etc.
email this mechanic back and ask about timing belt.
can you afford the insurance?
you say he wants you to trade in the car? he works for a dealer?
is there anything wrong with your current car?

well now he just replied, and said (" I am having NEW motormounts put in"). Now I say Im kind of scared because he could have disclosed this stuff yesterday, I guess he thought I was just a young dumb kid, and wouldnt notice lol. So now I really dont know what to do, but at least hes being honest.

it sounds like you are not ready to make this decision.
now, I understand at being 20 and having limited funds, but you need to take a step back and realize that 6grand is a lot of money.
if you buy this car, and it happens to be junk, you've wasted 6 grand. (ask me how I know)
Please get to know the car that you are buying. a smart consumer is a well educated consumer.

Mine just has a idling issue, he owns the mechanic shop, and yes I can afford it, what I cant afford though is to get it and something go out on it, thats what Im stressing to him. And he says he'll fix the issues I pointed out. The car has brand new michellin's on it, new shocks and struts. My current insurance is 28 a month, Im going to give my 3.0 to my grandmother, so ill be cancelling the insurance on it, the insurance on the 3.2 full coverage will be 76 a month, I can swing that to. Ive planned all that out lol.

Well, at least he's replacing the mounts, I would check to make sure that the rattling is gone before buying it.

I am going to be honest with you (I am from NC also) and I see second gen's all the time for about a thousand less that what this guy is asking. You can get a 6 speed for about 2 grand more around here. They are on CL all the time in the Charlotte area and if there isn't one now wait a week there will be. I would make sure everything at least didn't leave me with any doubts before I made a purchase of this size and if there is ANY doubts walk away and there will be another one somewhere else some other time that you will feel better about

I wouldn't do as those trannys are more glass than ours. Also since he didn't disclose the problems what else is he hiding. Id pay about 1k more for a 6sp and not one with rust. Rust will only grow and grow. It's like herpes its for life lol

this is an example of what I was talking about in the CLT area http://charlotte.craigslist.org/cto/2096474384.html I would much rather have this one than the automatic because if you take the transmission out of the loop not allot else ever goes wrong that would cost as much to fix

I appreciate everyones replies and helpful knowledge. I bought it last Weds, and I am honestly thinking about putting a for sale sign on it for what I paid for it! Anyone interested? lol

Lol. No need to rub it in my face. I mean the car runs great lol, but after really driving it and looking at the 97 vs the 01, there was no need for me to buy one at all. When driving it I feel like Im driving the 97 just more tricked out. Timing belts just done new tires, brakes and rotors one owner, blah blah blah! Its a nice car, just has some scratches. But like I said I feel like Im paying for a car I already have.
