H22a swap (ran search not helpful)

Hello everyone,

Like many of you, my transmission has begun to slip and it's just a matter of time before the tranny goes up on me. I have ran a search and reviewd indepth the posts that people have posted on this subject, but the problem is the information given is so scattered that you don't know what exactly to get, how much stuff runs etc... So if someone that has done this swap and uses their car as a daily driver has done this, maybe you can answer these questions for me.

I have a 2.2CL auto:

1. Since the transmissions they put in our 97-99 year CLs are trash, is it worth purchasing a new or rebuilt one, or should I just look into swaping my motor with an H22a?

2. Is the tranny that comes on the H22a more stable than the ones they put on our cars?

3. I am not sure if my 97 2.2 auto has the OBD1 or OBD2 harness in it. But if I am swaping out for an H22a, which harness to I need to make sure the engine comes with?

4. Will I need anything else for my swap other than the engine, auto trans, and ecu? Does this OBD1 or 2 wiring come with the motor or will I need to purchase some other stuff?

I would like this swap to bo as smooth as possible since this is a daily driver for me, and Honestly all I am looking for is a transmission I can depend on, and more power also!!.

Thanks, and I know there have been threads in the past on this subject but searching through hundreds of threads trying to find a couple answers is very time consuming, and if someone that has already done this successfully and is not having any problems can answer these questions, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

1. The trans in the CL is actually pretty good when it comes to the 5spd. You can get a used one for under $200 most of the time. The H22 prelude trans has shorter gears so you get better acceleration but less top end speed.

2. The one that comes on the H22 is not that different except for the gearing. Personally I dont see the need to pay the extra $300 so you can get the H22 trans over the F22/F23/H23(non-vtec 91-95 Prelude SI trans).

3. You dont need a harness for the H22 since all the sensors are the same on the motor as they are one the CL. It's basically a plug and play unit if you can score an OBDII H22. However 99.5% of the H22 motors you will find are 93-95 so they are OBDI. That doesnt make it any harder on you, it just means that some sensors are going to be left dangling.

4. You're going to want to get a new trans as well as a clutch and flywheel. The clutch assembly, a clutch cable off a CL, throttle cable from a Prelude, Master Cylinder, Slave cylinder, and the misc piping and reservoirs to go along with it, the P13 ecu (saves headaches) an OBDII to OBDI conversion harness. A map sensor and box from the 91-95 Preludes, and finally some belts, because i would not trust the ones that come on the motor. Oh yah... and a drivers side engine mount from the same year Prelude.... it's gonna have to be shaved down.

What might be more cost effective is to see if you can just pick up another auto trans.

I have a 93 JDM H22a OBDI that I need to get rid of. I'll let it go for cheap... like less than $1,000.

Hope this helped a little.

I think the first gen auto tranny is not bad for the 2.2, 2.3 as long as the car is not heavy modded etc. Looks like the HP limit is right there. Might explain y some peeps start having problems after putting in turbos and stuff. And there is always going to be cases where the tranny just fails. Happens in all cars.

93 is a damn good year H22. Early 92-93 Vtec H22 are supposedly the best.

the tranny on the 2.2/2.3 CL or accord is the same tranny as the H22 tranny.

Wonderful, all this information is so helpful, thank you all for participating and giving advice and views. Now I know what to look for. Hopefully by April I will have everything installed.

Accord and CL 2.2/2.3 tranny are not the same as an H22 tranny. Sure they will bolt up the same, but the H22 tranny is better built and has shorter gear ratio's. You want to use your stock tranny if you are planning to turbo your H22. The longer gear ratio's are more suited for boost. But H tranny is way better for all motor setups. I saw a H22 tranny w/lsd going for $200 so far, on Ebay a few days ago. That tranny's a good score.
