Grinding noise coming from alternator?!?

Grinding noise coming from alternator?!?
Today, I was driving on the highway when all of a sudden I heard this very weird noise coming from the engine compartment (passenger side), I pulled over thinking it was a flat tire or something, but no, it wasn't a flat. When I came back into the car I noticed my RPMs going crazy, going up and down, up and down... Found it VERY weird. Anyways, a bit later on during the day I heard (literally) a grinding noise. Someone told me that it was the alternator. Anyone else have that problem?!? I'll have it checked out by the dealer. Just wanted to let everyone know in case anyone else had/has the same problem.

Had similar problem on my old Corsica. Ball-bearing came apart inside of alternator.
