Going to Tahoe for the first time and taking my 98 CL
Any tips? Suggestions? I'm going President's day weekend, leaving from San Francisco in the morning. I've never been to Tahoe and this will be my first road trip in my own car. Should I get tire chains? What kind? Any tricks on driving on icy roads besides taking it slow?

most people just use cables now, they're more cost-effective and in most cases just as effective as chains. Also, test 'em out before you actually head out on your trip; on my way to big bear in my CL, we found out that the snow-chains were actually too small for my stock wheels >=O
on icy roads, keep yourself at a low-gear (2nd or 3rd depending on the grade) and just truck along. Driving in the snow can be scary as fuck f'real.
It's also a good idea to pick up some winter window-washing solution cause it's not uncommon for the summer stuff to freeze over, leaving you with no ability to wash your windows....
There's some other stuff that I'm sure the winter CL owners can chime in with...

Most of Tahoe, where you would be going is going to be plowed for the most part, so you really should not have to worry about it.

Kirkwood FTW
I took 9 stitches in my neck in Tahoe... 2 vicodin and about 10 vodka redbulls later, I was good to go....

The cable tire chains aren't as strong as the real links. My friend bought cables for his Toyota Camry and snapped a cable on it's fourth use. We ended up buying another set of cables and broke those at the end of the snow season. This time around, I went ahead and bought real chains instead. I bought mine from Les Schwab tires. They were $75, but if you don't end up using them, you can return them in April I believe (after the snow season). I treated them like a deposit. I've been up to Tahoe a few times from Davis and haven't used them yet.

I'd get the cables and not the chains. The cables are much less likely to eff up your car. A friend of mine took his GTI up there and had to put chains on and they ended up breaking his ABS and costing like him like $1500.
In terms of driving, it shouldn't be too bad, but that's coming from someone who has driven on snow since I learned to drive (I'm from Iowa). The biggest thing I noticed when I was at Tahoe (yes, I'm a moron and drove from Iowa to Reno) was that most drivers have no idea what they're doing. If there's snow on the ground go SLOW and don't make sudden changes, whether it be gas or brake. If you do start to slide the most effective method to not get totally screwed is to get off the gas AND the brakes as this will allow the tires to get maximum traction. Also, stay out of the higher RPM's as that just makes you more likely to break the front end loose.
Shouldn't be a big deal unless there's a blizzard or something coming in...I've driven my cl in ~10 inches of new snow and been able to get around well enough to get to work.

Went skiing at Mt. Rose the first day. Nice place, great beginner lessons and beginner slopes. Second day went to Northstar, which was REALLY nice even though it was packed.
Didn't hurt myself. Didn't hurt my car. I want to go again!
