Question Ghetto Intake

so an aftermarket intake is basically a metal intake tube and a cone filter right? well, this is gonna sound ghetto, but if i just removed my airbox and resonator and attached a k&n cone filter inplace of where the airbox used to be, wouldnt i get the same results?

well depending on if you get one that is ebay brand or AEM and Ingen. Ebay brand will just be the same as airbox just a loud sound. Aem and ingen are dyno proven so you will get hp + sound.

yup, there you go, a ghetto intake.

are you talking about putting a k&n filter on the stock plastic intake tube? that wont give the same results... spend another $7 on ebay to get the pipe at least so it looks a little better if thats what you're talking about... you prob. wouldn't get the same sound as an aftermarket intake if you did that with the stock tube anyway. if you're talking about ebay vs. aem/injen etc. thats up to you, the aem v2 is most popular here but theres a lot of debate whether its worth $230 or not

The shape of the pipe can make a little difference. But to be honest, the only bennifit you will get is a little less restriction and a lot of sound. You won't get any apriciatable boost in HP untill the intake's increased cold air flow is matched by an increased exhaust flow, ie; header, hi-flow CAT, 2.25" piping, flomaster muffler, you get the picture.

i actually did that, i took a cone filter and a little metal adaptor for it to fit onto and the adaptor to fit into the intake hose. it does give you some feel and a little better sound but honestly, go buy an ebay intake, it sounds alot louder and gives you more of the "performance" that your looking for, and it looks a shit ton better.

If you're trying to be thrifty go all the way! Instead of a cone filter use a coffee filter.

u think u have a ghetto intake. i would have killed for that setup when i first got my car. i had a open airbox from a 97 sentra connected to my stock piping. because i couldnt flip it, and i didnt want to do the sock trick. but now i went from a custom airbox to a AEM V2.

thats so bad for your car.. when pvc gets hot it emmits a gas that the car doesent burn off, and eventually the bottom side of your head has cooked pvc pipe attatched to it.

yeah thats that im thinking of doing too actually, cuz unless its like a V2, i really dont think the brand of the tube will matter all that much.

No matter what anyone tells you, it's just a hollow metal tube with a filter on the end of it. Aftermarket intakes tend to have a wider diameter for greater flow and use low-flow K&N style filters (again for greater flow), but designing an intake is not rocket science.

Come to think of it, it isn't even a particularly difficult brand of car science either.

The main R&D that goes into the various shapes of the cones, the lengths and widths and bends of the tubes has been for the resonance of the intake notes rather than for any particular HP gains.

ive had mine for over 2 years now.. with the cheap ebay "k&n like" filter.. and i havent had any problems with it.. as a matter of fact a friend of mine bought one at autozone for his civic and it looks just like mine.(same filter and type of pipe) he paid like 80$ for that one. i just bought the k&n recharge kit and clean it every once in a while. some people argue about the gains.. but realize that they are the ones payin 220$ more for an extra 1/2 horse power. any one in tampa have an aem intake? i plan on gettin prescious dyno tuned after i get my vfac, and that would be a great time to see if the aem is worth the extra money..

but to answer your question just get the ebay one.. i havent had any problems with it, nor have i heard of anyone ever havin any problems with it.

Yeah, don't let the big companies like AEM rip you off for shaping a pipe. As for ghetto, instead of PVC, I know a guy who made one from 3" stainless drain tubing. It looks real similar to mine... Hell, mine is semi ghetto in that I need to make or buy some mounting spars. Mine is held at the throttle body by the coupler, and by zip ties to a bolt that comes up out of the fender. In any case, you could make any number of options for intakes. I did notice that the tuning of the V2 is based on a bent cone. The shape goes from 3" at the cone mount to 2.5" in the curves and back to 3" befor it goes into the 2.5" throttle body intake opening. So, you could be creative and design and tune your own piping. Good luck.

yeah theres a reason the tubes are made of metal(most aluminum) well except for the iceman intakes are made out of some flexible rubber-ish material.

i dont think its quite the same. the jegs tube is like an actual quality thick flexible metal tube. dryer ducting however, feels like thick aluminum foil with a few metal rings in it.

You are also forgetting that you are paying extra for the marketing, powder coated finish, and CARB certification. Seriously, there isn't a night and day difference between a homemade, ebay, or AEM intake.

Got any pics of your homemade intake?
