funky smell coming from vents

for almost two weeks now, whenever there's air coming out of my vents, i start noticing this smell... it's just a generally bad smell, i can't even describe what it smells like. it seems to happen when the A/C is both on and off, and changing the temp & stuff doesn't seem to make it better or worse.

i keep thinkin it will just go away, but if anything it's getting worse... i don't even know what i could check... air filters, etc?? any ideas??

(oh and i just got a new refill for my squash air freshener this week too, and i can't really appreciate it when there's this nasty smell overpowering it!!)

You have mold growing in your vents. There is not much you can do about in the long run. I do think that they sell stuff at the autostore that will help get rid of it.
Oh yeah, when are you coming to Socal so I can fuck you?

Turn off your a/c before you turn off the car, this usually makes it better after a couple days.

Check where the cabin air intake is, see if you can see any funky crap in there.

Does anyone know if we have filters on the cabin air? Might be time for a new one.

I really don't know exactly why, but thats what I did when mine started to smell, and from then till now, I always turn off the a/c before turning off the car. It could also be, that the evaporator, and condensor aren't draining properly, because the drain on the evaporator is plugged.

Check to make sure there is water on the ground, under your car, after running your a/c. If there is no water, then it is not draining properly.

Try to use a ozone machine on your car. kills all the mold, mildew, bacteria, etc etc. works wonders.

This happened to me as well. The AC evaporator condesation drain became clogged and the pan filled with water and started to drip out from under the dash on the passenger side.

My mechanic took an air hose and blew out the line. A bunch of water came pouring out. He suggested taking Lysol and spraying it in the fresh air vent which is next to the wiper on the cowl. He said there is no way for the interior of the box to dry itself before mold, mildew, etc. forms and makes an awful smell from the vents.

So thats what I did. Bought a can of Lysol Fresh Linen Scent and sprayed nearly the full can in while the AC on high without recirculate. I used scented Lysol cause I can't stand the normal smell of it. Within a few days the scented Lysol smell was even gone and it's been nothing but fresh smelling air since!

A/C smell is usually related to a plugged drain

i had this smell when i bought my CL

What I did was turn off A/C before turning off the car.

I also hardly used the A/C, and in a few months the smell was completely gone.

it just gets a lil annoying when i'm tryin to get serious advice about a car problem and everyone has to try to somehow turn it into somethin dirty... i guess no one understands that.

hey do what they say if it s,ells mildewey... if your cars vent smell sweet, (i describe it as a maple syrup smell...) it means your heater core has gone out and your antifreeze/coolant is clogged up in there, it under your passenger side dashboard, midway up behind the carpet, and the back panel of the glovebox...if the smell does not go away after you do this lysol and febreezey stuff they are all talking about, check this, if you dont fix it, it can "drip" onto the carpet, which is really just moisture from inside the core causeing dew to drip minute drops of moisture onto the inside of your firewall, which over time, will cause rust, and fogged up windows, definately check this out, or, if your in the columbus ohio area, stop by hugh white honda, i will hook you up with cheap parts, and discounted labor...hope it helps...Ben

Who gave you neg rep points? I agree that some of these guys can be uncontrolable 'pervs' sometimes.

So, did you find out what was causing the problem with the vent smell?
