Fuel economy - shift points and right gear to cruise in

Just curious if anyone knows how to drive our cars most efficiently. 5-speed F22/F23.

1) When accelerating, what RPM is the best to shift in each gear?
Shift too low and it's terrible for fuel consumption since the engine is very inefficient at the low RPM. I tried shifting at 2K and it sucked ass. Slow and bad fuel economy.

2) When cruising, above what speed does each higher gear becomes more economical than the previous one? E.g. I am going 40 km/h and I can't go faster (traffic or shitty road or something else). Is it better to be going in 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear? Car can drive in all. Or going 60 km/h. Is it better to cruise in 4th or 5th? Etc.

When I first got the car, I was getting 9.3L/100 km (25.2 mpg) but I have recently improved to as much as 7.3L/100 km (32 mpg). This is around 90% city driving - we don't have crap for highways around here.

I don't know why you're complaining about 32mpg in the city...because that is amazing mpg numbers.

You should be in the gear that requires the least amount of throttle to keep the same constant speed you're wanting to achieve.

Damn, 32 mpg city is nuts! I consistently get about 25 city driving and around 31-33 highway with my f22/5mt.

32, wow. i thought 30 was max tested. a couple more mpg and you'll double the v6's mpg.

This.

Also the owners manual as some pretty conservative suggested shift speeds. Which would be good to look at for conservative acceleration.

Recommended Shift Points
Shift up - Normal Acceleration
1 > 2 15mph(24kmh)
2 > 3 28mph(45kmh)
3 > 4 41mph(66kmh)
4 > 5 52mph(84kmh)

Generally if I'm driving 40+ and just maintaining speed I'll be in 5th.

If you've ever driven a MT before you should be able to tell where you are and when to shift just by hearing the car.

The only time I even look at my Rs is when I'm going WOT.

i tend to shift at 3500 rpm, and i dont use 5th unless im at 62 plus.

i also manage to get 32 mpg average., close to 34 on the highway and 28-29 in the city.

the fuel consumption ratings for the 2.2 5spd when it was produced are 9.5/7.0 for L/100km in city and highway driving respectively.
...and your getting 7.3 in mostly city, i'd say that's really good, or as good as you're gonna get especially with a car that is over 10 years old
I usually shift between 2.5k and 3k depending on the gear i'm in, the lower the gear the higher the rpm, but i don't get the mpg that you're getting
I've also wondered if it would be fine to cruise at 65km/hr in 5th.. i usually just shift into it around 75 anyways

How many RPM's are you guys cruising at 60 mph in 5th?

I'm tempted to swap transmissions in my H22 Prelude, it (still) revs quite high at 60 mph and quite frankly it has more than enough power

My H motor revs at like 3k at 60. What tranny are you tempted to swap to?

cruising at 60 in 5th is about 23-2400, i feel like its too low at that point. like im stressing the engine. i tend to drive with 2600 being my lowest point, which is about 65mph.

I know, but it's so hard to tell at what speed this shift occurs. In both cases I am barelly pressing the pedal, so it's very hard to tell which one is slightly less.

I am hypermiling so the stock values in the manual are just something to beat. It's easily possible to get way better than the advertised mileage if you know what you are doing. It's not as if I am going out of my way to keep my fuel consumption low. It's just that you can't go fast around here anyway

I guess no one has a specific answer, so I'll try asking on the ecomodder.com forums. I'll report back if I get anywhere with this.

Not sure really, I was just curious. I know the transmission from the F22/F23 swap. I get a respectable 27 mpg on the highway at 65 in this Prelude (its a '91 with an H22), I definitely enjoy the fact that in 5th gear, it has plenty of power even in the mountain passes.

instead of posting a new thread. I dont know about yall, but i leave my car in gear when i park. seeing as my passenger side ebrake assembly's spring is shot to shit, ive got no choice.

i met a kid who leaves his car in reverse as opposed to first. does this matter at all? is there any difference? i wanted to call the kid a dumbass, but i dont even know..

I guess it depends if R is lower than 1.

I park mine in neutral and pull the hand brake, but that's because I have a remote start with NO safety.

you're gonna be at 3100 at 60. If you're cruising a bit faster than the limit, it's more like 4000. Awesome for passing, but shitty gas milage as result.

I shift when I feel like i've achieved the needed amount of power for that gear, very road and traffic depended.
If going uphill, i'll shift at 3.5-4
downhill, 2.5-3
sometimes i shift at 7.4

R is lower than 1, so chances are it moves less. but im to used to putting it in gear 1 than reverse.

probably a little lower, but not much. not really worth it unless you're parking somewhere real steep

Yea reverse is def lower consider you never really have to press on the gas at all when backing up the torque just pulls it.

Hilly/Curvy roads are the most fun to drive at least. I'm right on the edge of the glacial path where I'm living right now and a 20 min drive south I can hit some good hilly roads.

my 2.3 doesnt like the uphill parts. especially not with 4 people in the car, one of which being my 330lb best friend.

Yea I guess I didn't notice it as much as I only push the car when I'm by myself. I couldn't stand hurting a friend in an accident.

Oh and talking about added weight. I'll be going to Columbus Ohio Friday-Sun with my parents so I'll be running my CL + about 550lbs so we'll see how she does.

The gear ratio for reverse is the same as the gear ratio for 1st gear. They just use what's called an idler gear to achieve reverse drive.

The only advice I could give 3.0ers is keep it in D3 for stop and go if your under 50 mph but over that, put it in D4 when crusing or else you will be crusing at way to high rpms. I could get 24 - 25 mixed mpg using this technique which is pretty good for the J30. BTW, the car is more reponsieive in D3 since it shifts through less gears. Give it a try.

riding a bike gives better fuel economy.
i just got back from doing so, and it felt great
