Exhaust Noise Level Test (Cali Only) F.Y.I.

Exhaust Noise Level Test (Cali Only) F.Y.I.
If you guys didnt know that if you get a ticket for your exhaust for excessive noise, you can get it corrected...but most people will just put the stock or other exhaust on. If you know that your exhaust does not go above the legal limit like mine then you can go to a BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) Referee center to get it tested. I got a ticket coming out of my school, the cop said that my exhaust was "too loud" I presented him with the document from the exhaust company. This is the the CHP website....
Q13 Some aftermarket exhaust systems include documentation that the system has been tested and found to meet the requirements of Section 1036(d)(l), 13 CCR. Are those legal?
The CHP does not have the resources to independently verify manufacturer's claims, but is aware that some aftermarket exhaust systems do meet the noise levels specified in Section 1036(d)(l), 13 CCR. An officer may consider such documentation in evaluating an exhaust system for excessive noise, both during the issuance of a citation and when clearing a citation pursuant to Section 40610(b)VC.
But he didnt care, so he wrote me the ticket anyways. Its okay because i know i can go to the testing center and get it wrote off. This is just a info for those that have exhaust that meet the legal terms yet still get tickets. F.Y.I. legal limit in California is 95dbA (+/- 1.5dbA) he said that even getting 96dba is ok. Just call the number 1-800-622-7733 its a free testing only if you got a ticket, so you have to get a ticket first if not then you have to pay for the testing....duh.
Anyways my Tanabe tested at 92dbA
my car getting tested, and my friend Audi in the back.

Nice one brent, today I almost got rolled on. :cop: got off the freeway exit with me and was behind/next to me in my lane for what seemed like a 5min red light. He kept trying to look inside my car, and couldnt. Finally I roll my windows down and as I go 1st gear is loud as shit, he followed me all the way until I pulled in to school, I thought my time had come

Good info! Yeah, years ago when I got loud exhaust ticket on my Accord, I went to court and use the same law and argument about how the cop knows if the exhaust is above 95db without using any measurement device. Listen by ears are not valid under the court of law. Nevertheless, cop=0, me=1

not anymore....the new law is:
(27151CVC) removes the judge from the process by allowing the noise judgement to made purely at the officers' discretion.
and another
In practice, "excessive exaust noise" tickets are the most common violation. California law does not require police to measure sound levels objectively. Instead, according to the California Highway Patrol, the "citation is based on officer's judgment."
so we are screwed no matter what.

yeah, but its just a pain to go and do something about it...plus all the driving like you said. but isnt there a way we can avoid being pulled over...like a sticker or something that says "i am not rice" or something...lol like your "JDM" sticker.

I believe this law also is effective in Washington and Oregon, although I'm not sure of the specifics (like the new law of the officer being able to tell just by hearing).
Oregon and Washington always seems to follow the laws of California in some areas (like automotive)

LoL, My exhaust is just as loud if not louder than a 1st gen with full exhaust. I know it has to be sitting around 100 dBs. I can't hear myself talk on the phone with the windows down and the revs going up.

Hey Brent,
Do you need to have gotten a ticket in order to get that slip?
I'm scared my comptechs are close to the limit (they're a bit loud); and I'd like to run around with the insurance on it

Yeah you have to have gotten a ticket before you can go there. You can go to a "off-site" place that you can get it tested, but its like $35.

BAR Vehicle Exhaust Noise Level Certification Instructions:

another new law not posted above (similar i know):
New law (27150.2 VC) does not require law enforcement to use sound level meters to test for excessive noise. Citation is based on officer's judgment. Cited violators may have testing done at smog referee stations or may be directed by the court to have testing done. Vehicles in violation must be brought into compliance. A fine may also be imposed.
