ENGINE PROBLEM: It's possessed. Please read for info.

So I started the car up this morning and I noticed it idling really rough. Then all of a sudden, the engine begins to rev on its own. It repeatedly revs from 1500 to 2000 rpm's, COMPLETELY ON ITS OWN. It doesn't stop after a while either. I left it on the entire time I was checking it which was about 15 minutes, several times. I seem to smell exhuast gas too, I'm not sure exactly what the smell is though. Something is burning but not oil. It seems to me that the mixture is too rich. Like its getting to much gas. Or maybe a vacuum line?

Anyway, I'm completely stumped and I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before or if anyone knows what the hell is going on.

I gave the car a tune up about 3-4 months ago. Thats the last time I did anything to the car.

Thanks ahead of time.

That sucks

I have a 97 2.2 but i had the same problem as you are describing
My car seemed more likely to do it when the car was cold
I too was absoultely stumped as to the problem so i took my car to acura

They were stumped as well. So they just started replacing parts some were under emmissions waranty and some were not. They had my car for a month before they fixed the problem. Fine with me because i had a loner RSX the whole time and they only charged me for the first part they replaced so i got the other 4 or so for free =)

I will see if i can dig up the paperwork on it for you. Its somewhere around here.

its one of two things. Its more than likely your iacv. Its located on the front of the intake manifold and has two coolant lines running into it. You need to remove the three bolts in it (don't worry it wont leak out any coolant) and take some carb cleaner and clean the screen out on the it and bolt it back up. If that doesnt work you may need a new TPS, sometimes you can adjust them, but the us models are riveted on due to strict emissions policies. JDM motors are just fastened on with star bolts.
