Engine Cutting off

so last week or so ago i was coming home from work and my motor sputtered alil lost power then came back on and was fine all in like a half-sec to a sec. thought it was wierd but never did anything again.

so today going home for lunch and does the saem thing only this time lost power for about 1-2 sec and my key light in my dash is flashing. like motor is off but you have the key on. any ways then it cuts backon. then like 2 mins later i lose all power like the car dies no gauges not anything, but when i tried to turn it back over the motor was still running so i turned the key all the way off then back and it started fine.

on the way home did the exact same thing. los for a few secs then few minutes later complete loss.

now this afternoon its just cutting off no sputter or anything just dies but all i have to do is turn the key back 1 ACC then back on and its fine i dont have to turn the car over its still running. its like it just lost fuel or spark. does it every 5-10 minutes now. havent driven it much just to work and back and around town to try and figure out the problem. (5min drive to work )

to me it sounds like a fuel pump relay or regulator b/c its like it just loses fuel all of a sudden.

any help would be greatly appreciated

ps car is 1998 2.3CL

125k bought it with 112k gonna replace the fuel filter today. batter looks brand new think it was replaced by the dealer. its a Big ac delco. how big are the stock bats? it just looks pretty big for a 4 cyl bat. Wires look new too which means plugs SHOULD be new too but know how that goes.

aiit heres a few things u can do.... first check ur ground from ur battery to the chassy. if that is coroded or missing theres ur problem. next if that's not the prob, have ur alternator checked by autozone or something..(its free), then if that checks good, ask ur dealer if u had the ignition recall done or not. then if that is not the problem. check the normal tune up stuff. wires, plugs, cap, rotor, and fuel filter. if u have no dash lights when it happens its prolly something to do w/ the alternator, or battery ground. does it run fine whenits running? (low on power, or anything.)

If i call the dealer and have them run my vin can/will they tell me if the ignition switch has been replaced under the recall? (you have to be the original owner for them to do it free huh?)

what is the ignition switch is that my coil or my ignition(where my key goes in)

i had the same problem with the engine cutting off without warning, and then either coming back on right away, or a few minutes or hours later. this happened last november in 2003. when the engine would cut out, i could hear the fuel pump turn off, and the engine would not start again until the fuel pump came back on. i replaced the main relay with a new one from Honda, and the problem went away.

1997 Acura CL Premium NHTSA Recall ID Number: 02V120000
Recall Date: MAY 16, 2002
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
Potential Units Affected: 1000000
Summary: ON CERTAIN SEDANS, COUPES, HATCHBACKS, AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, ELECTRICAL CONTACTS IN THE IGNITION SWITCH CAN DEGRADE DUE TO THE HIGH ELECTRICAL CURRENT PASSING THROUGH THE SWITCH WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED.
Consequence: WORN CONTACTS COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL WITHOUT WARNING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 14, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.

This happened to me i changed the alt/fuel pump relay finally figured out from TACHO there was a recall. Brought it to acura with all the paper work showing that it was recalled and got the Ignition Switch replaced and runs like a champ now.. Go to www.NHTSA.com and put in your info and it will pop up all the info on this recall.... Thanks to TACHO for giving me this info so i thought I would share it with you....

I thought everyone knew about that recall. It is an old one. Also affected my wife's Accord. There are two other recalls that I know of...

Ball joint for upper control arm.
Shift interlock mechanism.
and of course...
The ignition switch.
