Dynoing an automatic?
Dynoing an automatic?
Sometimes I read thread about dyno's that people with manual transmissions have done. Alot of times they mention what gear they are in, and you can also see how power varies (not alot) when a dyno is done on one gear in comparison to another.
My question is, how can you do an accurate dyno on an automatic if you can't control what gear you are in?
Are dyno's of automatic cars considered less reliable.

good question.... i know on my 80 mustang i just disconnected the vaccume control module on the tranny so it would only up shift as the speed increased and downshift if the speed lowered. i laid down 418.25 to the wheels by the way.
i think u just leave it in d2. once ur in d2 it will not upshift or down shift. ur accually starting in 2nd gear from a dead stop.

You kind of have to hit it at the right spot. I think if you put it in D3 and punch it at 60 it won't downshift and you'll get the most out of the powerband. I tried to tell this to the guy that dyno'd my car but he wouldn't listen so he was only able to get from about 4K above.
