DIY request: Remove rear bumper cover...

So my rear bumper cover was fucked up by someone who couldn't parallel park...and the fucker ran away after the fact so now i'm left with a peeling bumper cover...

I'm thinking about removing the cover myself and spray it instead of going to a shop, can someone post up the info on how to remove the cover....

Also, some instruction on how to paint would be great... like what are the steps to prep, how to mix base & color, where to get base, clear coat & primer for cheap, any tibits that let me save time & money...

thanks guy!

pop the trunk and get those clips then unscrew it from the sides..

and are you sanding it by hand or with a palm sander?

either way just sand it down with P80 grit and take it down to the factory primer and then go to ur local autoparts store that sells paint and take ur paint code with you and have them mix up acouple cans for you..it'll come all ready to go with paint and clear..

also buy primer too

Silver, Can you be more specific on how to remove the cover? could you take some pics please?

I'm sanding it by hand. Don't have a sander... if anyone can let me borrow theirs, i'll really appreciate it...

I already have a 1/4 gallon of paint from the last time i did my lip, is it enough? So i dont need to buy clear coat when i have the shop mix using the paint code right?

Thanks for the info.

can't really take pics cuz my car aint here and its in pieces at school but just pop the trunk and you'll see like 5-6 little clips (dont know the exact number of them), just take those out and unscrew the screws the hold the bumper to the 1/4 panel..

if you get the paint in a spray can then it comes with clear and all that, but if your using an actual paint gun then you'll have to buy clear separate

Sorry for reviving this thread, but I was rear ended and my bumper is messed up and I wouldn't mind replacing it myself. Gonna try to get a black bumper from salvage to put on and pocket the extra money since I need it bad.

Sleep: Did you manage to get the bumper off fairly easy? Also, if possible could you take some pictures of how you got it off? Thanks.

I still haven't fix the bumper yet ... just don't have time to do it myself. But to take off the bumper is very easy: just pop your trunk, you'll see some circular clips where the trunk lip were, just use a flat head to pry them off. Then use a phillip(?) screwdriver to unscrew the screws holding the bumper cover...

It's pretty simple but i think i'm gonna take it to a shop, dont have time to repaint...

Ah ok I'll take a look at it then. Anyone have a clue how much it would cost to have a bumper painted? $100?

If you're lucky. Probably around 150-200.

I tried looking on Ebay, but there wasn't anything on there. I searched a junkyard database and got 4-5 responses so I'll follow up on them tomorrow. I searched for a Black bumper already so I'm hoping for $225 shipped or something.

Yes much love, but that shipping adds the $$! I'll see how good quality I can get from a salvage yard and then compare quality/price. Thanks though!

I did exactly that in 2004 and for the same reason.. try not to break too many of the plastic clips when you take it off, I remember I spent $70 just on new fasteners at the time.

Alternatively you could repaint it when it's still on the car and mask it real good first. And follow what it says when you buy the paint to the letter. I used Sherwin Williams Ultra 5000 but it's a bit pricey. The clear you can pick anything. The problem you might run into is the gloss is higher on the new clear than the rest of the car, fix this with 1000-2000 wet sanding and/or rubbing compound.

You can scuff the existing paint with 600 sandpaper it will be a bit of work to get it level if it's peeling only in one particular area
