did i get ripped off? had brake prblem 1999 2.3 CL
hey guys
first post here, i own a 1999 2.3 CL (5 speed) with 85000 miles on it. Recently, i could hear the brake making a rubbing noise so i took it in to the honda dealership for a normal servicing. The guy said that generally about every 45000 miles the brakes need to be replaced, and in this case the rotors were beyond just being re surfaced. (He showed me them too, he said that the pads were at 0 and the rotors were too thin) So long story short, I spent 600 for 4 new rotors, 4 new brake pads, all installed, a basic inspection and an oil change. is that a good deal r no? he wanted to charge me 160 more because he said that the brake fluid looked black (instead of clear yellow), but i wasnt willing to pay that much, it just didnt seem to make sense. so should i go to an indy shop and get my brake fluid flushed and some new fluid put in for some less $? or is it the brake fluid just a scam and i shouldn't worry about it?
thanks

where is....
its true brake fluid should be clear, so should power steering fluid. i mean that sounds like a good deal for people who pay for brakes.....but its much cheaper to do it by yourself. i ended paying a little over $100 for just rear rotors and rear pads. i think its alot cheaper to do it yourself but its a pain.

the rotors seem questionable. You should have asked him to give you reading from a micrometer to seem if they really needed to be replaced. They could've possibly been turned instead of replaced depending on how much thickness they had left. As for the brake fluid it should be a light yellowish color. If it is dark then it probably is a good idea to have it flushed because brake fluid does absorb moisture. I had mine flushed for about 70.00 at a Honda dealership.

ya i actually had them give me the old rotors and pads, i have a micrometer, should i see how thick they are? i just want to know if this honda dealership is going to try to take me for a ride every time i go there, or are they being honest about it. so i should pay about 70 for the fluid to be flushed?

yea I paid around 70 for a honda dealer . Im sure you could get it done at an independent shop for 40-50 but it might not be Honda brand brake fluid. or diy for even cheaper. I'm not sure what the min thickness is for the oem rotors but im sure someone on azine knows. I heard of many honda owners never replacing rotors for up to 150-200k miles. Don't know how true that really is.

Nope that's not that bad a price for all that work truthfully, and you may wanna change your brake fluid next if it's that bad/old

Yeah my 96 accord still has original rotors... 142k miles, except the tranny is shot so it sits in the driveway
Edit: They also have one hell of a mean lip from that many miles and they do need to be replaced. I'd say they have lost half a CM on each rotor (counting both sides). If I were to let the pads get too low, I'd scrape caliper... Used to beat the crap out of that car, but I never relied on brakes, I don't race up to the next red light only to slam on the brakes.

hey guys thanks for the responses,
sorry to bring up an older thread, but the acura dealership is saying they can flush my brake lines for 110. should i go ahead and do it? also isnt it strange that they are charging 50 less than the honda dealership?

parts are very cheap for the CL...interchangible with accord
rotors can be resurfaced instead of replaced...but they are like 20 bucks brembo for the rear
and it very easy for DIY as long as none of the bolts are rusted through

alright thanks for responses, honda wants 160 to flush my brake lines and acura only wants 110, should i go with acura? the guy @ honda told me it was black fluid which didn't need to be urgently replaced but should be replaced.
