Dang Clicking Noise Under The Hood
Ok so this has been goin on for a few weeks i think... when my car is idle i hear a random, clicking noise.. it doesnt have a pattern and is not part of the rhythm of the car at idle.. i dont know how to explain it but it will click a few times not really going with any pattern then go away for a sec. i tried to figure out where its coming from and so i think i hear it coming from around here or @ least the left part of the bay:
also then i slightly tap on the gas it speeds up and when i punch it i hear like this clicky noise going really fast for the 1st few thousand rpm's then it goes away.. any suggestions? when the gears change again from 1st to second i hear it again for the 1st maybe 2000 rpms. i know this description blows but i really dont know much about it and my mechanic isnt gonna be able to look @ it until monday, thanks for any suggestions..
btw i gotta 97 3.0 if that makes a difference..

welll... not too familiar with the J engines.... but on my H22... a clicking noise or some scratching noise... turns out it's my distributor...and it can go out any time... so i gotta get it replaced ASAP!

It's most likely your belts, sounds like they need oiled or tensioned.

i have a pattern tho.. its a steady click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click ..... when idle
and when i accelerate.. it gets faster.. not really sure what the problem is.. its been doing it for about 1 year now.. haha.. so.. i dont think its a major issue.. it just gets annoying.. haha

If it is a chattering sound... It is most likely the a/c compressor clutch. Mine clatters a bit, but I don't think it is anything to worry about. It is caused by gunning the engine with the a/c on. The compressor disengages when the kickdown sensor is triggered, but in doing so... it puts added stresst on your a/c clutch. The only other things it could be...
Distributor failure...
Tensioner pulley failure...
either way with these two issues, you prolly better get that looked at. I lost a pulley at 80 mph at 3 a.m. on I-70 somewhere in western KS. That 4lb brass POS flew outta there at 3500 rpms. Man, my old Teg got lucky it didn't break anything on the way out of the engine bay.

if u go to your local auto supply shop.. they should have a spray called 'belt dresser' .. use that. .and it should lube up your belts a bit

theres a vaccume control module over there..it clicks as the diaphram moves. this is it only if its a light click. if its loud like a valve then get it looked at.. also in the back the rear mount is vaccume controlled to stabalize vibrations, it too has a diaphram which clicks.

Is it down low or up high... take a large MagLight and hold it lamp end to your ear. Place the other end flat against the valve cover and listen to each cylinder. You will be able to tell real quick if it is a valve.
