Unhappy Dag-nabbit those there Silverstar Ultras

Well lets just say im a pretty pissed off person. So lemme give you my story. Back during like last march, i had silverstar ultras, and they are awesome. But after 1.5 months one burnt out......So I got a new one, then a week later hte other burnt out, so i had anough and got cool blues (FTL).

So here I am about 1.5 months ago in PepBoys. thinking alright they are on sale ill give them a go. So today im backing out of my driveway and i see the loveliness of my lights on my white garage. Then i drive less than 3 miles to the mall and i get to a dark area. and my lights didnt seem half as bright as usual. Im like fuck no, and i park and run out and look. My light burnt out. So now im like wtfff. Screw Silverstar Ultras.

And to top it all off. I sent the receipt in with the rebate so how the hell do I explain that to PepBoys lmao

Has anyone else had trouble with the gosh darned bulbs?

Oh my lanta

Not a big fan of the Silverstars either. I know some people swear by the, but I had the same problem with them blowing every few months. Best I've used are the GE Nighthawks - just as bright and much longer lasting, but I did the ghetto 9005 conversion as of late. Plug and play HID kit is going in tomorrow if it doesn't rain.

BTW, it's still an HID kit even if it's not a projector setup. Second gen CLs came with HIDs but the housings do not have projectors. Unless you're talking about something else?

I thought that:
Halogen = Halogen
HID = Xenon
Am I right?

Oh, and I have had my Silverstar Ultras since I bought the car and neither have gone out. I do want a plug and play HID setup tho. Maybe this summer when I get my job.

I had cool blues, and they suck ass compared to HIDs.

Get an HID plug and play kit bro. Takes half an hour to install and it wont cost you much.

are the CL lights set up (designed) well to work with HID retros? Like, do they put out the light in the right pattern or whatever? I know the g2 tegs lamps aren't, i have no experience with ours but I'm looking at an HID kit...

It's not going to look as a good as a true projector retrofit, but as long as you aim the properly as to not blind other drivers you'll be fine.

Yes, I went through about one every 2-3 months.. about the fourth time Partsource refused to honor the warranty. I'm an engineer who does electricals for a living and the kids making $10 an hour at the place tried to tell me that it's my fault and there's too much current going to the bulb.. this with stock wiring and the regular fuse. I thought it was pretty funny..

So finally I went back to regular bulbs and I didn't miss the aftermarket ones as much as I thought

That's ridiculous that some people have them and they last forever, while others have them and they blow frequently. I wonder what the problem is.

you could have wiring/alternator issues? if the blown bulbs had a blister on them when you took them out they came into contact with something. like your finger.

When my Silverstars blew the first time, I demanded a refund from Advanced Auto Parts. They weren't happy about it, but they did it anyway. Just depends on who is working and the store's policy.

I doubt you're going to need an upgraded harness. BTW, those bulbs will be dim as all hell. Any filters (that blue coating on the outside) will reduce the output.

You shouldn't need an upgraded harness unless there's something wrong with yours, or you're running a special setup. My HID ballast plugs right into the stock headlight harness.

The bulbs with the best output will have no filter on them, no color at all. For stock applications, I use GE Nighthawks. If you want to spend a little more money, look into some PIAA bulbs.

Blue = less output. If you don't care how bright they are, get whatever that has a blue filter. If you want to do it right, get an HID kit at 8000k temperature.

If you're not comfortable doing a projector setup, the plug and play kits are simple. Took me about 15 minutes to install mine today.

Don't go too blue, 6000K is the blueist you should go. That's what I have on both my projector setup and my 4runner, and that's more than blue enough. I may go more white on the car even. Plug and play kits are just small little ballasts with a set of 9006 wires that have the same connectors as your headlight bulbs. I'll post pics if u wanna see, or just search on ebay. Shit, here

just grabbed a couple pics off ebay. Or you can check out the DIY in our diy/faq forum. THere's pics in there too.

The ballast (those silver boxes) plug into your stock headlight bulb harness. The HID bulbs plug into the ballast. You just have to find a good spot for the ballasts. Very very simple.

I ran original Silverstars for about a year and a half before they just burned out, and IMO thats pretty good for 9005s in constant use, I will vouch for a 9005 conversion, its goodlight, cheap. . . now im running plain old Sylvania XtraVision and theyre fine, I rather like them, very good for the price

if youre looking at alot of wiring to the battery then it sounds like youre looking at a relay driven harness kit, its the safer way to go, absolutely, but not totally neccesary
