Curious about alternators

Lately it seems like alot of people have been making posts about alternators going out...

My car is a 97' w/ 68k miles on the odometer. At what milage do they normally go out? or is it more the year of the car? Im just worried about having any problems with mine. Is there anything I can do to prevent mine from going down the tube? Any actions i can take to slow the wear? Is there any signs of it going out, or does it just go out?

Mine went out around 130k. An alternator Is the main power source when the car is on, and charges the battery.

You can have it tested at a dealership. I have a friend that works in a place that has that machine. He tested mine (took three mins). It reads the output and the ability to charge and hold the charge. Then i prints out a chart of the ability and label it as good, bad, etc. I pasted with a good at 90,800.
