Cracked Windshield

I live in the Northeast where we've been hit with an unusually harsh winter. I had a 1/2 in. crack in the windshield of my 99 CL 3.0 which came from a stone being kicked up from a truck on I-95.

I left it alone for about 1 month. I guess water accumulated in the crack. As I used the windshield defroster the crack extended to 2 1/2 feet & now must be replaced. I literally saw it move accross the windshield.

I called the dealer & they gave me a price of $685 installed. Is this the going rate?

Would I be better off sticking with the dealer, as the original windshield has etching in the glass.

Your insurance won't cover that? Check to see if you have window coverage. Otherwise I think if you take it someplace else you would end up spending around $300. I wouldn't take it to the dealer.

$685?????? Holy shit!! My place down here replaced mine for $300!!! You're getting ripped off bro! Go call up your insurance and pay the $100 deductable. Your insurance rates wont go up because your windshield is covered under comprehensive, not collision.

I called my insurance company & they said that its covered under comprehensive but I have a $1,000 deductable, so its not worth submitting a claim.

I will shop around for the windshield though. Thanks for the info.

Definitely shop around. The dealer quoted me $600 for my old Accord's windshield so I found an independent shop that did the job for $225.

Thanks for the replies. I shopped around & was able to get it done for $230 installed from a local shop. Thats $455 less than what the dealer wanted. They put in the same windshield I had before.
