Cost of Transmission Rebuild?

I want to go on a road trip cross country this summer with a friend of mine, to NYC, Miami and then Monterrey Mexico (to see a friend) and I know my car would be up to it. The only thing I would be worried about is my transmission. It doesn't grind or have synchro problems, it just make a clicking noise from inside it. If I'm in a parking lot going around 15mph if I give it a little gas and then let off it'll start clicking/ metallic thunking but its a different noise then the CV joints (plus theres no vibration). Also, if I downshift into 3rd, 2nd or 1st without being really smooth it'll make the same noise.

I jacked the car up and moved my axles around and it sounds like its coming from inside the transmission, which is really weird since other then the noise, its perfectly fine. I wouldnt want to be in the middle of nowhere and have my transmission grenade or something.

btw, could it be clutch related? Because if I make sure to shift super smoothly it wont make the noise.

edit: I'm going to buy some stock springs or sportlines or something to put on for the trip, theres no way I'm gonna drive 6000 miles 2" off the ground

Sounds like the tranny's starting to go, mine clicked for a while too b4 it blew. It was a problem with the bearings at the rear of the tranny breaking off and floating back and forth through the gears shredding chunks off and then the gears weren't catching all the way or something along those lines, my tranny rebuild was $2800

Fuuuck that sucks. When I go home next month I'm gonna drop the tranny and take a look. Maybe I can replace whatever's worn before it completely destroys itself

But I'm also gonna go through Mexico :P

Plus, if I had mechanical trouble there is no way they could get it on a flatbed without destroying my car. I'm just gonna grab some other springs to be safe. Plus my friend would drive too, and he doesn't know how to drive a slammed car (he owns an Echo haha).

You think so Jay? Its loud enough to hear inside the cabin. btw, there needs to be another meetup sometime soon.

I would definitely need to replace my clutch before the trip, it doesn't slip at all but it doesn't engage until its almost out of pedal travel.

Damn, my '99 CL rcently started doing this also. Shifting from 1st to second i can hear a "faint knocking" from the engine...I didnt know what it was until now..Unless its a super smooth shift, it usually happens...also I have trouble getting into 1st sometimes...ill have to shift to 2nd then back to 1st, could this be a syncro problem? Im glad I bought the extended warranty for the tranny, ill have to bring it to a dealer and haev them figure it out.

nah were gonna have to deal with it, its something with our gear synchros.

does 1st gear for you sometimes engage ruff or half way, then u let of the clutch and it falls in place?

Yeah, when the car is moving at more than 4-5 mph and I try to put it in first, a lot of the time it will either be rough or will go in half way, then kinda fall in or ill pull it back to second then try again. That doesnt really bother me. What bothers me is when it falls half way in and then grinds a wee bit

if its a problem with the synchros, would double-clutching help?

I think all our manual tranny's have a rough 1->2. Also a rough 2->3. 3->4 and 4->5 are good though. Smooth like glass.
