Climate control question

Can someone tell me how the water valve on the heater hose works? That's the valve that control how much coolant/water goes in the heater unit, it's located behind the engine it's 2 hoses that goes into the firewall. Can someone tell me how it's activated? Is it cable or vacuum activated?
