checking my tranny fluid...

OK before anyone says any thing YES I DID USE but I didn't find exactly what I wanted to know.

I've actually never checked my tranny fluid before maybe thats why my first tranny had to be rebuilt but I wanna keep my rebuilt tranny in much better condition. I just got a couple dumb newbie questions.

1. Im still unsure if my 97' AUTOMATIC 2.2CL is suppose to be checked while the car is running or while its off? I alwayz thought you do it while its running? Like right when i start it or after a 10 minute ride or something?

2. What color should it be exactly? Anyone have like a picture of the fluid being checked?

3. How much should be in there? Is there away to tell if you have too much or too little?

4. What shouldn't it smell like? Some people say there smells burnt?

5. Whats the blot test or sumtin?

Thankz in advance sorry for my newbish questions...

hmm, i dont know what the blot test is, never heard that....ffor the color, pink.....good tranny fluid is pink, and the wrose it is the more black it gets....i assume you know where the dip stick is....you do check it with the motor running....whether or not the motor shoul dbe hot is up in the air....i dont check it hot, i turn it on cold and check...the dip stick works the same way as your oil, theres two marks, high and low......if you dont know where your tranny dip stick is, check your manual...but if you pop the hood, look down right infront of you to the left slightly........its down there....low...and has a yellow handle......to add flluid you need a long funnel (autozone's etc sell em!) hope this helped bud!

I would check it hot under normal driving temp thats the best way to get an accurate reading.

Re: checking my tranny fluid...

1. Heat the car up to normal operating temp (let the fan kick on), then shut the engine off to check the level.

2. The fluid should be a reddish pink. Just a little lighter in color than the fresh fluid that went into the tranny.

3. There should be an "upper" and "lower" hole on the dipstick. The tranny fluid should be somewhere between the 2 holes.

4. It's hard to describe what it "should" smell like. However, you can definitely tell when the fluid is burnt.

5. The paper towel test:

New ATF will penetrate a paper towel better than used oxidized ATF. To compare old fluid with new fluid, place 3 drops of new fluid on a paper towel and 3 drops of used ATF on the paper towel about 3 inches from the first sample. Wait for 30 minutes. The new ATF will have expanded (penetrated through the paper towel) much farther than the old oxidized fluid.

I almost added a sentence or two to read: "If there are no holes, then there would be a series of cross-hatches (X's). Just make sure the fluid is in that range; not higher or lower."
