Change filter and not Oil?

Hey Buds!
I'm not sure if this is a noob question but just recently I changed over to mobile full synthetic OIL for high milage engines and on the jug it states, "protection up to 15,000 miles or 1 year." I live in south Florida and am running 10-w 30 opposed to 5-w because I do not have to worry about the cold conditions. I use a Mobile M1-104 high effiency filter as well and it last about 5,000 miles before I will change. If the oil is good for 15,000 can I just repalce the filter every 5k and add the difference from loss oil from old filter during change? Or do I need to change the oil and filter together at 5k? Thanks guys for all your replies!

it really depends on your driving style. Sythetic can last "UP" to 15.000km, but i wouldn't go that far. The reason it can is because it doesn't break down like regular oil.

If you dont push your car too hard, and the temperatures aren't too hot around were you live (You dont fall under the severe driving conditions), you can change your filter at 5000km and then do another 5000 till the next oil change.

Just dont forget to add the oil you will lose when taking the filter out. And also, dont be surprised to see oil leaking out of the engine if your using synthetic for the first time, its normal for older engines to leak synthetic!

Wow, thank you so much for that tip about the tiny synthetic leak. I replaced my oil gasket twice last oil change because I had such a tiny little drip from the seal/plug. Well at least I know shes not pregnate and is gonna cost me an arm and a leg... Haha

I wouldn't leave oil in my engine that long, no matter what they advertise, 5-6K is the max I would go, and even that's pushing it

^the OP was saying 15000 miles... so about 25000 kms
i would personally never go that long without changing the oil, i change mine wayyyyy more frequently than that, i'm not even going to say now, because it's way more than most people
lets just say i'd have a few oil changes in between

. Rather pay for an oil change regularly then pay for the effects that used, burnt oil can cause.

You also have to worry about the container you drain the oil into having dirt in it that you could put back into the engine, or the oil that ran along the oil pan and drain plug bringing some sand with it. Probably not a big deal, but why add one extra thing to worry about.

Guys, our oil filter is way higher than the oil pan. he will loose maybe .5L of oil MAX if he takes out the filter.

The misconception about "oil can't last more than 5000km" is false, regular oil can last about 6000km and more, if it doesn't get contaminated (gas from misfires, leaky piston rings (exhaust gases in your oil), a lot of abrupt temperature changes which create moisture in the oil). The recommended 5000km is there for the filter, because the filter gets clogged at around that mileage.. Synthetic oil is recommended at around 7-8000km because its thinner and can still go through a clogged filter where regular oil will have trouble... But the oil itself is extremely resistant to contamination and can last well over 10000km if the engine is in good condition! I went to an auto mech school, so what I'm saying is what iv been thought by teachers.

I myself flushed my engine, to clean it up with regular oil that i ran 1000km with. I drained it, and filled it up with mobile1 synthetic rated at 24000KM. I will never go past the 10k mark, but i will change my filter at 5000km, and keep the same oil until 9000km. Because there is no need whatsoever to buy such an expensive oil if your going to change it after 4-5000km... a regular castrol gtx will do fine!

interesting, didn't even realize how long it lasts and it explain my valve covers leak now. I switched to mobil 1 about 10k ago, and changed it once.

I also switched to Bosch filter thanks to that wonderful filter review video by that cracked out guy.

hehe, yeas. Some seals will leak. The absolute best would be to replace both crank seals, the camshaft seals and valve cover seals, as well as valve stem seals... but what the hell.. who is really going to do that! And lol to the "lifetime fluid". The only fluid i consider as lifetime, is the ATF fluid on cars that haven't changed their ATF for a LOOONG time! Don't touch that time bomb!

Synthetic is a great oil. It cleans A LOT better than the regular oil, is thinner and has better capabilities. So often, on a high mileage engine that has been running on regular oil, there is a ton of crap around the seals, and with the movement of the crank and cams, it scratched the surface the seal sits on.. but it doesn't and wont leak because it is regular oil.. as soon as you put good synthetic, it cleans out all that gunk, and leaves some nice little hole for that thin oil to come out of...

i would think if you remove the oil filter, you'd loose a good amount of oil... i think the best way is to see the condition of the oil on the dipstick - insert think with your dipstick comment here lol - and go from there...

oh the h i change it every 2500 miles (havent gotten around to my 2nd oil change yet, shows you how much i drive it lol)
