car overheats because fan only runs when the car is off???
my radiator has a small crack in the top of it that only leaks when the temp gets real hot and the thing is when i have the car running neither fan will kick in even with the temp going near the red zone. i cut the car off and the fans kick in for a few minutes and when i start back up its perfectly fine. which sensor should i check or change? im going on a long trip and want to make sure everything goes good car wise. thanks

i would suggest you fix that crack. Fill that crack with some sealant/ JB Weld, then check the coolant level inside the radiator, refill if necessary. My temp needle went thru the roof when my radiator was low on coolant.
Another thing you should check is the thermostat. Not hard to replace yourselves.

I'm not sure about this but I think the reason the fan does not turn on when the car is on is because when the car is moving the radiator gets enough air flow, and the fan turns on when the car is off because there isn't much air flowing on the radiator.

The hole in your rad can def be causing you issues, otherwise test your thremostat, if it's not the thermostat, there is a relay switch that controls the fans that sometimes goes bad. One fan should always be on, one should turn on and off, this might help too
