Keep in mind that the needles themselves are not lit up (at least, not on the '97 model). My guess is that a light(s) has burned out (either a backlight, or the one that shines from the top of the gauge cluster).

Dust is correct, the needles on all the first gens don't light up. OK, if it serves me correctly, it is only a bulb. You have 2 bulbs that each light up half of the cluster, or the 2 needles in question. If you were to take your cluster out, there are 4 wedge bulbs in the rear, and two very small wedge style bulbs on top. These bulbs take care of illuminating the needles. You could do it your self, but you have to get your hands on those bulbs first, they are hard to find.

Would dealer have them? I guess that Autozone is out of question.

Autozone might have them. I know you cannot get that bulb in colors, alot of people want to replace them when custom gauge work is done but cannot find the bulb. But if all you are looking for is a plain bulb you might be able to find them. A dealer could def get you one, and it is an easy install one you have the bulbs. Only like 6 or 8 screws, and your done.

How do I get access to the bulbs? My gauges don't light up now either on one side. Do I have to pretend I'm installing indiglos and remove the steering wheel cover, cruise control switch, dash light dimmer. etc? Or can I just take out those two screws at the top of the gauge cluster housing and get enough access to replace those bulbs?

u pull the cruise control button and the dimmer switch out and there are 2 screws...under the top of the guage is 2 more screws. the cover should come right off. i think about 6 more screws holding the guage itself down....unscrew that and pull that sucker out. i think u can find those bulbs at Radio Shack...i wanna replace mine with some bright LED.
