I took mine completely off the car so I could get the whole caliper. You can leave the brake lines attached and use a coat hanger attached to the springs to hold the calipers up while you paint.
I painted mine the other day (aluminum) and it looks pretty good. I just used engine cleaner to clean them first and them used a brush to paint them. Very easy job, nothing to it. I think it takes longer to jack the car up and take the wheels off than it does to actually paint them. I also did my custom mesh grill the same day and it turned out great, it the same as vxcl's. It took me 4 hours and was a pain in the ass, but was well worth it.
u talkin hood grill? cuz yeah it was a pain. took me 2 hrs to paint the all the dame diamonds silver. it was teadious. i wish i could post a pic, but freakin comcast deleted all my shit cus they are their own cable internet comp now and my shit was on excite.
