some rear caliper pistons need to be twisted and pushed in at the same time, not sure if ours does though

Yeah
They need to be turned in
Your better off buying the $10 tool to do so or it will get real painful. I have tried many different methods before buying the tool and each time i eanded up with bloody hands. You need to do a lot of turning and pushing at the same time.

I used a very large flathead to turn in it. On my '98 it's not that big of a deal. I'm not sure if it's any different on a 97.

The only problem I encountered was that I had to get someone to help me take the caliper off. On mine, you can't just unscrew the bottom screw on the caliper and flip it up, we had to take off the top screw too. And taking off the top screw is a BITCH.

The right rear wheel was hard, the left rear was easy because you get a better angle.
