Blacked Out Headlights

Hi all. I apologize if this thread is already out there but I was looking around and found one post....but the threads strayed off of the subject. The question is this. Has anyone taken off thier headlight covers so they can paint the headlight trim black. I tried taking off the headlight assembly but couldn't. There is 4-10mm nuts holding in that biatch and I couldn't get the last one which was sandwich between the mounting tab and the fender itself. So i tried cutting that gray sealent and everytime I cut it, it re-bonded with itself. I was unsure of using a heat gun as I do not want to melt or disform the cover in any way. So with that being said, does anyone have pics or know the link of a thread that contains the instructions and pics of how it should be removed? Thanks in advance guys!

There are a lot of people here that have them, me included.

Like this?

This is how i got to the headlights to remove them

You gotta take them out and pop them in the oven at 250 for like 15 min a piece. That melts the sealant. You have to slowly pry them apart. you have to be careful. Its very very easy. I was scared while i was doing the first one cuz i dont have the money to replace..

Some people use heat guns. I used the oven. its just preference.

You wont melt anything. They are in your engine compartment, so they see heat all the time.

Some people sand the chrome off the ring and some dont. I did. I used a fine grit sandpaper like 160 i think. Sanded it all down. hit it with 2-3 coats of primer. Then like 4 coats of flat black with 30 min intervals. Just do light coats so that it does not run.

Thanks Swerin'..One last question, when you pryed off the light covers, did you clean up the old sealent or did you use the original? If you didn't use the original, what sealent did you use? regular silicon? Thanks again for the tip!

After you get done painting them and let them dry. Put the new black peice back into the clear part of the headlight, lay a nice bead of new silicon down. I just used the 50 year silicon for a house. Preheat your oven back to 250. Throw the two pieces back in there. Let it sit for 15 more minutes to heat up the old silicon.

After 15 min, take out the lights and squeeze them back together.

Yeah that button!!!

But in his defence. I know from past experience sometimes its a pain in the arse to try and filter through all the posts that come up. Mainly because sooo many posts get hijacked.

Its sometimes easier although annoying for some of us that have been here for awhile, to just ask the question again.

I know i get annoyed when i see the same questions over and over and over again.
Kind of like this question.

PM if you have any questions, but its really easy. There is a DIY in the DIY section. Plus you can just google blackhouse headlights. They are everywhere.
