Well this past summer I sort of fell into a totaled out 2000 Accord with running motor. After parting everything out I had a free motor and a good bit of money to get me started into this build. My current 98 Cl has over 230k miles on it....probably way more being that the speedo hasn't worked in 2 years. My plan is to get everything ready to boost this December. I would do it now but I need my car running while I go to school.

Here is what I did this past weekend. First was to get the motor on the engine stand, makes life easy and saves my back.



The motor above has 100k miles (way less than mine) so I went ahead and changed the water pump. Well the crank pulley was zero fun since the impact gun couldn't handle it and we didn't have the cable wrench to hold it still. We also had no torch but we did have ingenuity. What was used to break it loose: Ether, Lighter, Large Ratchet, and a Sledge Hammer. After several good wacks with the hammer the impact gun was able to take it off with ease.

The flame was a lot bigger in person.



We actually didn't finish this process until the next day due to the women folk wanting to go out to eat. And the final product.



Here is a pic of the log manifold, turbo, and wastegate bolted up. From looking at how the down pipe will run there may be an issue with hitting the ac lines. Guess I will find out when it goes in the car.



My friend a sandwich plate for the oil feed line lying around which he generously let me use.



Next weekend I plan on painting the valve cover back silver. I might get started on tapping the oil pan but with Halloween I may not get a chance.

If anyone out there has already done a turbo build and wants to shoot me some advice, I'm all ears. I have a feeling running the intercooler pipes are not going to be fun but that is apart of the game.

I will keep you posted as I do more work and especially after I get it running and tuned.

Thanks, everyone, I have been putting off doing a project for 3 years now. My last car was a civic which I put a gsr motor in. Just been riding in the CL ever since hoping it wouldnt break (bought it with 170k miles already on it, now over 240k). Ill post pics as I make progress, the real work wont take place till beginning to mid December.

 

Is it an ebay turbo or what brand? Specs? Goals?

 

No ebay turbo here, its a Turbonetics T3/T4. Im only looking to boost around 5-10 psi (probably closer to 10, depends on how I am feeling on tune day) nothing crazy since it will be a daily and my pockets are not that deep. Anything near the 200hp range would be nice.

nice man. ten on stock internals? hmm idk usually people go about 7 or 8 tops with out being built. Hopefully she won't blow up lol should be sickkk.

I know 10psi is pushing it on stock internals but I have seen it done and hold up. Thats why I said maybe, plus Ill have a back up motor. I could be back up and running in a day.

Ok so I somehow found time this weekend to get the valve cover stripped and painted. Wasn't going for anything crazy just a semi stock look to keep it clean. Here is the result.

 

everything thing is coming along sweet, and looks awesome as well, that computer costs quite the pretty penny, ill be following along, love to see actual progress. congrats

 

Build looks GREAT man - not too many turbo cl's out there for sure!!
Love the paint on the valve cover too - if you're looking for a stock look, put a straight file to the letters and it will look pro!!
Can't wait to see how this whole build turns out!!

 

Well my cl is now boosted and tuned on 7.5 pounds. Ill post pics later as I clean up the install. My friend and I swapped my f23 with a f23 that had about 150k less miles on it. Here is the progress

Saturday - Pulled motor and prepped for install
Sunday - Installed new clutch and put motor back in car, rigged up the intercooler piping (hence the cleaning up still needed), car started but idled like shit due to forgetting to swap idle air control valve to a 2 wire
Monday - had downpipe made and exhaust run (2.5" all the way back), drove up to Mainstream near Atlanta and had the car tuned
Tuesday about 4 in the morning arrived back home to sleep for two hours before work

Now for the numbers....195hp and 215 ft-lbs at the wheels. I wanted to hit 200hp but I was just happy nothing blew up.

I will post up in the next couple days some pics of the install and the dyno sheet. This was just a teaser for now.

Summary......3 days of work, 1 motor swap, 1 boosted cl, 1 happy person

Be patient, I will post pics after I clean it up. The setup isn't presentable right now. We just got it working first. Going tomorrow to have the waste gate dump tube welded into the downpipe. I dont even have my bov welded into the intake yet (probably doing that thursday). The intercooler sits a little lower than the bumper so I am going to fix that this weekend. When all that is done I will post pics.

Sorry but everyone will have to wait a few more days. Hard to get stuff done now that I started working full time.

 

I think it would be nice to see a progression from how it is now to what changes you make to what you want it to look like

With a little touching up that will look great. And as for driving it, 215 lb/ft instead of 140 always makes a car more fun to drive lol. I have more horsepower than you, but you've got 55lbs more torque, something i could definitely use!

Well didnt get the exhaust finished today, still waiting on two flanges to come in before they can do anything.

Im running a 4 channel MTX 400W amp to push Alpine Type R components and also a 1200 Watt Rockford Fosgate to push a Blaupunk 12" 1200W sub. Also have a Rockford 2 farad capacitor to prevent the headlight dimming problem. Head unit is just a double din Jensen touch screen. It gets the job done but nothing special.

 

I guess I should post up the dyno sheet to make it legit. The torque curve was removed due to issues he was having durring my final pull. The signal kept going in an out so the graph looked jacked up.

 

Ditch the cap. It's going to end up causing you more harm than good in the long run... Just upgrade your front batt and you'll be fine. Something like an XS Power D5100R would work great.

I will ditch the cap when you buy me a baller battery. Picked it up with the 4gage wiring kit for 20 bucks from a buddy who was fed up with his car. Been running great for the past 4 years. Thanks for looking out though.

Nice work on the DIY turbo install. I really like the stealth look of the intercooler. A lot of guys around here drive around without a front bumper for a weeks to make sure you know they have a new turbo set up.

 

Its been a while since I have posted on here but just to update everyone on the build heres what i have been doing.

- Tucked the intercooler finally, you cant even tell its there now.
- Oil gasket was leaking so i fought with that a few times before finally stopping it.
- Just two days ago the radiator started leaking, I have a new one just looking for time to put it in.
- The radiator fan has been out and my new one wont be here till Monday (too bad I leave for school Sunday and cant get to it until the next weekend).
- I know you will want pics, they will be up saturday after I finish with everything and wash her.

Anyone that has boosted an f23 before had trouble getting the idle down to normal. I did the 3-2 wire iacv conversion but the iacv is just hanging for the moment. I plan on ordering the conversion plate so I can bolt it up to the IM, just haven't done it yet. Right now its sits at 1500 rpm which is a bit high for my liking. Other than that car runs great and is extremely quiet.
