Not for the engine, per se, but you're putting an extra load on the tranny. I do the same thing!

I think it completly safe to do up-shifts. Just have to be careful doing down shifts.

Our trannies are not really built for UP or DOWN shifts.. it puts extra ware on the the trannies w/out a doubt.. I down shift D4 to D3 always when braking hard... I have had no probs (knocking on wood violently)... Just know that you run risks when doing it, thats all... so if something happens you have an idea why and know better for next time!

I'm so used to driving a stick I always let off the gas when I'm shifting up or down. Seems like a safe thing to do, especially when you get the rpm's up. I've had no problems but I don't do it very often.......

someone posted a thread in Car Talk and he said that downshifting like that puts extra stress on your clutch...does this sound right??? i'll try to find the thread...i think it was called "10 myths about cars" something like that...

i'm always in 1st or 2nd in rush hour traffic. i like the engine to slow me down instead of using the brakes all the time. if i'm in a rush in the city, i like to control the gears because the tranny is too slow to predict what i'm doing sometimes. actually, i miss my manual tranny so much i shift 90% of the time.

the owner's manual even says that we can do up/down shifting and "drive it like a manual" so i don't think i'm abusing the tranny.

Actually, there are many clutches in an auto. It depends, but there can be as many as 20. I don't know the details of our tranny's though.

If you shift your auto tranny's manually all the time, you'd better do a flush about once a month if you intend on keeping your car for more than just a couple of years. If you have that urge to shift, go get a real manual instead of fuckin up your auto tranny's cause you don't know how to drive a stick.

Perspective...

Jackie Stewart - 3 time world driving champion - recommends NO downshifting in any car other than "race prepared". His reasoning: you could miss the shift and blow the tranny; besides - brakes are much cheaper to replace and were meant to slow the car.
