Arm Rests Re-Do

Today I decided that my center console arm rest was lacking something, PADDING. That damn thing was hard as a rock!!!

So I went about fixing the problem

Parts Used:

1" thick foam pad (arts and crafts store)
Can of spray glue (arts and crafts store)
A Screwdriver (I hope you already have one mabey two)

This was really simple

First open the arm rest
Then take out the 2 screws holding the arm rest to the console
Then Remove the armrest
Next lay the armrest with the leather side DOWN
Then Remove the 4 screws from the underside (that is now facing up)
Next remove the plastic. There are clips on the sides. I just pulled mine out
Then Pull off the leather, it is held on by some glue, just pull
Next Cut the foam to the size you want
Then apply some glue to the plastic top and the foam bottom
Then carefully place the foam on the plastic part
Next test fit the leather over the foam
check to see the seams are stright and that you have enough leather to glue back down on the inside of the plastic part
Then apply glue to the top of the foam
Next work the leather into place
Then apply glue to the inside of the plastic and the sides of the foam/plastic
Next finish fitting the leather back into place stick the edges down
Then attach the plastic underside back in with the 4 screws
Then attach the armrest back to the console with the 2 screws
Finally close the arm rest and ley your elbow enjoy

I thinkn thats how i did it

I had to trim the edges of the foam (as to make it not like a square block on the top outside edges)

I dident think the 1/2" foam would have ben soft enough so i went with the 1". It was a tight fit but I made it fit.

I also modified my door panel where my elbow busted through the plastic so i glued a thick pice of plastic and made a metal L bracked to help hold the weight

So now i have a soft arm rest in the middle and a reinforced arm rest on the door =)

o yea and I LOVE THE SOFTNESS !!!

Man I Think it is great that you did that because it is too hard I will probably follow your lead on that one because I had already been thinking about it. Thanks for letting me know how easy it is. My passenger side door arm rest must be cracked also because when someone sits there and puts their arm on it makes a clacking noise. very irritating by the way.

yeah i gotta redo my arm rest on the door when i bought the car it was cracked i took off the door panel and a chunk of the plastic was cracked out, i was gonna use the spray foam that expands and then hardens, everytime i put my elbow on the door it sinks down, i gotta stop being a lazy shit, i just had the door panel off today to replace the speaker

I was thinking the same mabey actualy try some leather. Start at the line on the arm rest and go back with it down the top of the arm rest and could attach it from inside the door panel

Just an update: I took off the leather and found that my armrest had NO foam left. Really. So far I took some goo gone to it and got rid of the remaining foam. Then I peeled off this layer of adhesive (think saran wrap on crack). Then I used more goo gone to get rid of IT'S adhesive. Now I'm left with a perfect surface to stick the foam to. I'm gonna go out to get some foam and glue, then I'll post pics of everything.

I did it last year. Once I removed the leather top I used 409 cleaner and a coarse kitchen sponge to scrub off the old sticker slab foam on top of the plastic. If you turn the leather upside down and sit the foam in it with the plastic on top you can just screw it together without glue. The pressure of the plastic and leather will sandwich the foam in place especially if you use a thick piece of foam like I did (1.5).
