Ok I was just about to put my money down on an Apex Rev Speed meter... boy would that have been a dumb mistake. They only come in kmh (well good for u canadians) So instead I am about to go buy a VAFC. cheapest I could find is $320 + shipping then about 100 for the install. HEre is my question? Could I install it myself? (I am good with engines) How do you know the settings to run it on (are there even settings?) When mounting it on the dash how do you hide the wires to mount it on the dash?better gas mileage? help me please

it's best to have it installed along w/ some dyno tuning. You could install it but you probally can't set it up. Also, check out ebay. Or email tw112 form this board. He had one for sale he still might have around.
I installed mine myself. I used my factory service manual cause the apexi diagrams are wrong.
You'll have to run 0% correction until you get it tuned.
Dont know about hiding the wires mines in my glove box.
Tuning the VAFC will give you more power and better mileage.....no question.

Wideband oxygen sensor in your tail pipe while on a dyno. It will tell you your air to fuel ratio at a given rpm.
Too lean @ X rpm.....dial in +Y% on the VAFC at that rpm.
Too rich...keep taking away fuel until it starts losing power.
My brother got 25 or so hp gains in certain parts of his rev range (97 lude). He didnt gain any peak, but he now has vtec engaging at 3100 and has a ton more power earlier.
Plus stock map on a lude has a a/f ratio of 11:1 for upper rpm range. Way too rich for NA. He was able to dial that in and is saving big time on gas.
Not bad...better gas mileage and more power.
edit...btw these things are as good as air fresheners untuned

OK I went in to a shop in my area, Evil 1, and they told me he would charge 50 bucks to intstall and program the VAFC. But to do this I need to buy a dual EGT gauge (because I have a V6) and an Air/Flow meter to tune it (because when the mix gets to lean it gets to hot) But here is the thing. The dual EGT valve cost 250 or more (his pricem, msrp) He said this is the only way he can tune it. But can you get these quages cheaper somewhere else?? What should i do! This SOB is gonna cost me like 650!!!
Stear clear of that place.
Find a performance shop that will install it and tune it ON A DYNO.
You need to ask them if they have a wideband oxygen sensor as well.
The install could be as much as $100 or $150 (thats why I did it myself) and the tuning shouldnt take more than 1-1.5 hours at $100 an hour or so.
Hell you can get the factory service manul for $50-$75 dollars and youd still be money ahead.
You cannot tune the VAFC on an EGT gauge and anyone that tells you that should not be trusted.

I dont understand why this wouldnt work? I have researched this stuff and it seems like sound advice. many sites even said that the Air/Fuel mixture is a neccesary guage when using the vafc. What about the dual EGT though? why isnt this needed? Is it the same thing as a pyrometer? Its not that I dont believe you its just that I dont understand
also I know of no place in town that takes dyno tests

thanks for listing all of those places...elkart is like right next door to me. I am going to email them now!
How must did you get your dual egt for? Is it still worth it?? and should I get an air/fuel meter too? Hopefully I will be able to hook this baby up myself. Do I need to make the changes myself or will they help me?
SORRY for all the Q's
THANKS AGAIN!

You dont need an a/f gauge. The ones you buy for less than $700 are worthless for tuning. Use theirs on the dyno.
You should be able to hook the VAFC up yourself with a good manual.
The shop I went to knew nothing about the VAFC so learn how to use it before you go just in case.
Does anybody know if the V-AFC work well with the 3.0? I've heard most honda's run rich at the top end. I really like the idea of lowering the vtec point. Mods: i/h/e/plugs/coil/pulleys/velocity stack port on tb
