Air Intake VS Drop in filter

This might be a dumb question, but is it better to put on a Air Intake System, or to just a Drop in Air Filter like a K&N?

It's better to put an air intake system on, drop in filters are for people who don't want to replace the whole intake system

^^^ True and if you put a cold air intake on you take a resonator out and get a nice sound when V-tec kicks in.

ok, this is going to be the "stupid question of the day"

what exactly is VTEC and when does it kick in/what does it do?

Come on Blackack I am sure you weren't born knowing what V-tec is. Here is a link that does a pretty good job explaining what it is. Basically what you need to know is that the valves work at a better effeciency in higher RPMs when V-tec is activated, creating more horsepower.

He's tired of people asking questions like that when they can search... and he still doesn't need to be a dick about it... but when you answer that question a million times it gets old... yea, but you still don't need to be a dick about it...

That's how this thread will be in a hot second... =)

Im more of a reader than a commenter.....but blackack is callin people noobs left, right, and centre. If its a question you have answered before dont answer it. Theres are tonnes of people on this site that know the answer and dont mind answering it. Give them a chance for once, instead of answering the question right away or commenting "noob"

I did know what it was long b4 i bought my car and I wasn't much for imports when I bought my CL, but I sure as hell knew what the car had b4 i read it, not to mention it's stamped on the top of the engine. But I did know what it is, I'm not trying to be an ass, consider it hazing of the new guy, but had I not known what vtec was, I would have researched it at like howstuffworks or somewhere. Not trying to be an ass, just sick of people not knowing what they have or what they bought

In answer to bud's question. The K&N drop-in filter combined with the intake resonator removal will give you pretty close to the same hp gains as a CAI, but I much prefer the sound and performance of a CAI. If you have a 3.0, I have a barely used K&N drop-in filter that I'll sell ya. I only used it for a couple weeks before I gave in and bought myself a CAI.

back to the topic, either way nets about the same old 2 or so HP, but the new intake sounds better... much better, I can pop in a vid of mine pushing it on a flyby on a camera later, its great. the metal pipe works much better than the OE rubber ish one.... once that cam switches its great, and its not exhaust at all, because our VTECs cant actuate the exhaust valves, its all intake

BUT theres another option and ive seen it done before, I tried it as an experiment after reading about it and after having my AEM, anyways, theres a way that you can get a coupler and pop a cone filter on the stock intake pipe after removing the airbox....... sounds better than stock or any other drop in, and you get much better flow than a drop in card type filter........ a good AEM SRI can be had for 100 bucks new, a cheapo eBay one can be had CHEAP and its essentially an AEM clone

Its your radiator overflow/reservoir , and yes, there is supposed to be a cap on it. From that picture it looks like its missing? If thats the case, it could screw with the pressure in your cooling system. Does your car run hot?

Yes, thats where the air enters your intake. your car if fine.

Guess I'll steal Black's picture. Thats what its supposed to look like. It has a cap. Go pick one up from the salvage yard. I'd be that one from any honda of that same era would work.

Mach: since you have such a good pic up there, could you point out the VSS please. i was given a diagram of where it is, but the intake is on the other side and i am not sure if it was automatic or stick at that. i have a 97 3.0 automatic.. please point out where the VSS is if possible. i need to change that out asap!
thanks!

You have a CL premium, the CL-S refers to our 2nd gen brethren. I have the first link you posted, works and sounds great. Put a K&N filter on there and be done with it. Just doesn't mount well, gotta use custom brackets. Mine is still hanging there, as I'm too lazy to mount it properly.

I can't show you the VSS from those pictures. It was my understanding the Vehicle speed sensor was around the axle. I'm probably wrong though.

im pretty sure our 3.0s are unique, as opposed to our 2.xs which take Accord parts direct

The engine sits about the same, but I'd recommend buying a 98-02 accord v6 intake it's bent for your engine

and we were filming this at a warehouse district of sorts, so LOTS of big buildings to reverb the sound off of, that probably what youre hearing in the beginning

They look identical to me, I would go with this one, because it has the rubber screw mount with it.
