AEM CAI- noise???
Right now I have a Short Ram intake and want to get a cold air. From the short ram there is a loud humming noise when the car is running for some reason, I was wondering if this happens with the CAI. I also have a whistling noise at certain points when I accelerating, I have heard other people talking about the whistling, but never the humming.

Is your short ram tube vibrating against the hood (or some other metal)?
There is a "natural" humming (resonance) that comes from the intake.
The intake definitely "whistles" at certain RPMs!

What is even louder the humming or the whistling? I can live with the whisting, but the humming is loud as hell and a little embarassing, Ive never heard an intake that loud.

Initially, I thought it was too loud when I first put my intake on, but now I love it!

I have had both a cold air and a short ram. I think the humming is louder with the CAI. The whistling is still aparent in both at about 2,500 rpm. After awhile I got used to the humming as well.

It sounds like maybe he is talking about the humming when the car is in idle. If that is the case, then maybe it is vibrating against the hood or something else. I have a CAI and it doesn't sound real loud until about 4000 RPMs.

Yeah the humming is when the car is in idle. For sure its not the CAI hitting or vibrating on anything. Its just like a humming noise of the air going in the filter.

when your car is at idle. the throttle plate is closed but air will still be sucked through creating a natural hum or whistle. it is almost a high pitched whine with just an open throttle body. now add a big long aluminum tube that is tuned to resonate with the intake charge and now you have a big trumpet. the stock intake is designed to suppress this noise with rubber plastic and things like resonator boxes. i noticed today that if i rev my car in the driveway so the TP opens and the hum goes away...when i let off the gas i can actually hear the TP close and then the hum comes back.
the hum at idle is completely natural and is no cause for concern, the CAI should make the hum lower pitched since the tube is longer but loudness is another story.

It's normal...................I hate that noise. I get some wierd looks and questions about it.."What the fuck is wrong with your car?"
"What the fuck do you have in that thing?"
"Damn I can hear you down the street!"

This noise at idle is tunable. Note I did not say curable. Just tunable.
Theres a idle adjustment screw on the throttle body. If your standing on the passenger side facing the driver side, you can see it. Mine had a little rubber coating over from the factory.
Anyway turning this in or out adjusts how much air your car gets with the throttle closed. Turn it in a 1/2 turn see if it gets better. Note where you start and put it back if you notice any drivability problems.
I turned mine down quite a bit. I did drop my idle rpms down to like 400 but the noise is much lower.
