AEM Bypass Valve Poll
welcome to blow off valve 101. Guys i need help. What the hell are these for other than to keep water outta being sucked into the engine. How does it do it? Does it hurt perfomrance? Does it sound any different? How much is it? Is it hard to install? ~ any/all help would be greatly apprecaited. ~Thanx guys
Hey 97acuacl dont confuse a blow off valve with an aem bypass valve. A blow off valve is what turbos have that make that cool psshh sound when they boost. An aem bypass valve is suppose to stop water from getting into your engine if your CAI filter were to become submerged in water.
Its not the easiest thing to install because you have to saw your cai tube in half in order to install it. In theory it sounds like a good idea if you drove your car into a puddle but how often do you drive your car through a pouddle deep enough to reach your filter?
It shouldn't make a different noise unless its actually stopping water from getting into your engine. Heres a pic of one.
By the way I go up to Orlando alot, Disney World and all. Hopefully I'll see your ride there one day.

Here what it saids about it at teh aem web site www.aempower.com
Air Bypass Valve
AEM’s Air Bypass valve for Cold Air Induction Systems virtually eliminates the unlikely chance of water ingestion should the filter element become wet from deep puddles, rain, hail, sleet or snow–or any other scenario in which the filter element could encounter or become submerged in water. The valve installs along the upper portion of the inlet pipe on the same axis as the throttle body centerline. Should a drop in pressure occur within the pipe due to filter submersion, the valve shuts down induction at the filter and routes incoming air through its external orifices, eliminating any chance of water ingestion.
And heres a pic of it installed.
And by the way theres also a recall on alot of the valves becase the come apart and get injested into the throttle body. Those of you that have the bypass valve should read this. http://www.aempower.com/voluntary.htm

unless ur shit is layin on the ground then theres no reason to get one unless u plan on driving through some 1ft deep puddles. u have to submerge the filter in water like a straw for it to suck up water. use ur $40 for somethin nicer liek guages or some engine dress up stuff.

I guess I'm in the minority for those who replied, but it's definitely worth it. Are you going to even risk, no matter how minute the chances are, but just risk screwing up your engine b/c you didn't want to add a $45 part? That's just silly. I mean even on the off chance that water does get sucked in.... you are totally screwed if you don't have the by-pass. Forget about warranty work getting done. Sure, now you have an excuse to do an engine swap, but for those who don't have the money, the by-pass is a $45 piece of mind. For more info on how it works, etc.... check this out....

i agree with juniorbean on this one.
sure there is an off chanse that you might run into a puddle.. but why risk it. it's only 45 bucks.. i say spend the money. it's a little reassurance if nothing else.
I HAVE IT...
I DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH LAKES OR PUDDLES
AND IT HAS WORKED FOR ME!!!!
I n everyday rain it is easy to wet the filter in such a low position... It get wet one rainy day and i heard a loud whistling sound... popped the hood and it was the by-pass valve...
How does it work?! Who cares. . why ask why??

Dont have it and it rains 6 months at a time here. I used to worry about it but no more.
Think about it. The engine will always suck air preferentially to water unless the entire filter is submerged. I'd worry more about your starter, etc.

thats gunna suck when this guy reads all your comments saying "screw that" "its useless" "spend your 40 bucks elsewhere".. and he drives through a storm and he's stuck on the side of the road with a siezed engine.. because he didn't spend 40 bucks to get a bypass filter... seriously.. its 40 dollars verse 2xxx bucks for an h22a.. and god knows how much a v6 honda motor, from honda, would cost.... btw (note to moderator) wheres the hammerhead smiley.. the one with the smiley and a hammer.. you know.. where is the shit..

i am going to have to say no on this one. anyone that has done any type of extesive research on engines knows small amounts of water are good for an engine. it cleans out your intake, and it increases compression. in the past few had experimented with water injection. kits were even made, and they worked, but people got trigger happy and started hydrolocking engines and the idea died down. we have been experiementing with water injection on a 94 eclipse.... awesome when done correctly.
